Smith Fund documentary grant application period begins Feb. 1

The Michael P. Smith Fund for Documentary Photography, established by NOPA in honor of a Crescent City photographer who spent his career documenting the city's music and culture, will begin accepting applications for its 2012 grant on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

The fund annually awards one $5,000 grant to a Gulf Coast region photographer whose work combines artistic excellence with a sustained commitment to a long-term, cultural documentary project. Emerging, as well as established, photographers residing in the Gulf states of Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are eligible to apply.

The award honors the late photographer Michael P. Smith.

Applications will be accepted through Friday, March 30. For submission guidelines, and to download an application form, you may visit the Photo Alliance website's MPS Fund page.

Potential applicants should note that the grant is awarded by a juried, two-part review process. Three preliminary jurors first select ten finalists, and a single juror selects a recipient from those finalists.

This year's preliminary review jurors include:

Glenn Ruga, director of Boston's Photographic Resource Center and the SocialDocumentary.net website;
Paul Moakley, Photo Editor at Time magazine; and Ellen Fleurov, Director of the Silver Eye Center For Photography of Philadelphia PA.

A 2012 grant recipient will be selected by Brett Abbott, the Curator of Photography at Atlanta's High Museum of Art.

Curators lead walk-through of "RAW" at HomeSpace on Sunday

Curators Luis Cruz Azaceta and Sharon Jacques will lead a walk-through of "RAW," the current exhibit at the HomeSpace gallery in New Orleans, on Sunday, Jan. 29, beginning at 2 p.m.

The gallery is located at 1128 St Roch Ave.

WWII Museum registrar's talk concludes NOPA exhibit this Sunday

Toni Kiser, Registrar for National World War II Museum, will give a talk at the New Orleans Photo Alliance gallery this Sunday, Jan. 30, at the conclusion of a NOPA exhibit of selections from the Jungeun Lee series, "Silenced Suffering." The talk, "Korean Comfort Women: Sexual Enslavement During World War ll," will begin at 3 p.m.

The Photo Alliance gallery is located at 1111 St. Mary St. in the Crescent City's Lower Garden District.

The photos in the Lee exhibit evoke the testimony of these Korean women, who were enslaved by the Japanese military during the war. The Lee exhibit opened during the PhotoNOLA, the city's annual festival of photography, on December 10. It closes on Sunday. For more information on the exhibit, please see this previous NOPA entry.

Artist talk concludes LA West Bank exhibit at McKenna Museum

The George and Leah McKenna Museum of African-American Art of New Orleans will be hosting an artist talk on the evening of Saturday, Jan. 21, in connection with the conclusion of a photo exhibit, "Becoming Home," that focuses on African-American residents of Louisiana's plantation country.

The series of photos by Marianna Sheppard and Nakeya Brown examines, more specifically, the lives of black people on the Mississippi River's West Bank. According to the museum, the exhibit's 30 photos show how residents have built, cultivated and maintained their region's grandeur.

The exhibit opened in early December 2011 and concludes Saturday.

The artist talk will begin at 6 p.m. Complimentary refreshments will be served. The museum is located at 2003 Carondelet Street in New Orleans.

ASMP chapter presents seminar on marketing on Jan. 24

The New Orleans/Gulf South chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers will present a seminar on marketing for photographers, led by writer, speaker and consultant Colleen Wainwright, on Tuesday, Jan. 24. The seminar, "Making People Love You Madly: Selling Yourself in a Postmodern Marketplace," will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at at Professional Color Service in Metairie.

Among the subjects discussed and information provided will be:

A simple, logical framework that photographers--or any creative types--can use to market themselves more effectively, online and offline.
Strategies for improving one's social media engagement that can be put to use immediately
Tips and tools on making websites and their copy more compelling to prospect
Real-life examples of all the above, including profiles of photographers who are successfully using social media to gain work and attention

The cost of the seminar is $25 for ASMP members, $50 for non-members, and $40 for members of professional associations, such as NOPA. Student admission is $10. Joyce Tenneson 'Trees of Life' exhibit opens in NOLA on Jan. 16

A Gallery for Fine Photography of New Orleans will host "Trees of Life," an exhibit of the work of Joyce Tenneson, beginning Monday, Jan. 16. Her work will be on view at the French Quarter gallery through Wednesday, Feb. 29.

According to the gallery, "Trees of Life" addresses the relationship between trees and humankind, in a way that harks back to anthropologist Sir James George Frazer's 'The Golden Bough," a comparative study of religion and folklore. The new works are mixed media, involving a fusion of photo prints and gold leaf.

Tenneson, who lives and works in New York, has studied photography and worked in the medium for more than four decades.

She received the Infinity award for Best Applied Photography from the International Center for Photography in 1989, the Photographer of the Year award from Women in Photography International in 1990, and the 2005 Lucie Award for Photographer of the Year. Her photographs have been published in 16 books.

Upcoming Canon Workshops

Canon will be holding an all day seminar/lecture on Saturday, February 11th from 10 am to 6 pm, as well as two hands on workshops on Sunday, February 12th from 9 am to 5 pm. Both events will be taking place at the Contemporary Arts Center, 900 Camp Street.

Posselt photos of Crescent City showing in Lake Charles

The 1911 City Hall Arts and Cultural Center of Lake Charles, LA will be showing a collection of photos by NOPA member Rita Posselt, beginning this Friday, Jan. 13. The exhibit, "Open Shutters on the Big Easy," will run through March 15.

An opening reception for "Open Shutters ..." will be held at the center on Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The collection of photos from Posselt includes images of the French Quarter and Mardi Gras, as well jazz funerals, musicians and celebrations. “New Orleans culture," the photographer said, "is like none other on earth. I work to capture the spirit of the people who laugh in the face of adversity, and celebrate at the drop of a hat.”

Posselt, a native of Marinette, Wis., moved to New Orleans in 1972. She lived in the French Quarter for 33 years, and operated the Posselt-Baker Gallery there from 1984 to 1990. Posselt served as an archive photographer for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation in 2008.

The center is located at 1001 Ryan Street in Lake Charles. It is open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. For more information, please call 491-9147 or visit the City of Lake Charles website.

Leonard, Shaw works in Mobile AL center's 'Pulse' exhibit

An exhibit of work by two photographers who have called New Orleans home, including the late Herman Leonard and former NOPA Secretary and current PhotoNOLA Coordinator Jennifer Shaw, will be presented by the Center for the Living Arts (CLA) of Mobile AL, beginning Friday, Jan. 13.

The opening reception for the exhibit, "PULSE," will be held at the exhibit venue-the CLA's Space 301 gallery in Mobile--Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

According to the Centre, the exhibit of the memory-infused Shaw and Leonard photos--which focus on Shaw's Hurricane Katrina evacuation experience, and Herman's iconic images of American jazz musicians, respectively--will make for a relevant run-up to a nine-month CLA initiative that opens in the spring, "The Memory Project."

The "Pulse" exhibit will run through Monday, Feb. 27.

The photos from Shaw will come from her series and book, "Hurricane Story." In the series, Shaw uses dolls and children's toys and dolls to depict her family's post-Katrina evacuation experience, which included the birth of her son.

The Leonard segment of the exhibit, "Above All, Enjoy the Music," will feature 40 of the most well-regarded works of Leonard, known for images of such major jazz icons as Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, among others. He lived in New Orleans for 14 years, moving only after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He passed away in August 2010.

Wet-plate collodion demo Sat., Jan. 7 at Homespace gallery

NOPA members Bruce Schultz and Euphus Ruth will demonstrate the antique art of wet-plate collodion print-making on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Homespace gallery in New Orleans' St. Roch neighborhood. Also more than worth noting: After the demonstration, attendees may have their portraits made and printed in the mid-19th Century collodion style, one strongly associated with images from the American Civil War.

Photographers Jenny Sampson and S. Gayle Stevens will also be on hand for the last day the gallery's "'tintype' show," to discuss their recent work in the same medium.

The event will begin at noon on Saturday and run through 5 p.m.

Barry Kaiser photos opens in Marigny gallery on Sat., Jan. 7

A retrospective exhibit of the work of New Orleans photographer Barry Kaiser of New Orleans will be held at the Scott Edwards Photography Studio & Gallery in the Marigny district, opening on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 and running through Feb. 4.

The Edwards gallery, located at 2109 Decatur St. (at the intersection with Frenchmen St.) will host a reception for the exhibit on Jan. 7, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Tulane faculty's photos in NYC exhibit: 'Hotel California'

Photographs taken by Tulane art professor and NOPA member Stephen Hilger's series of color photographs of the famed and now-demolished Ambassador Hotel of Los Angeles will be on exhibit in January 2012 at the MUSE Center of Photography and The Moving Image in New York.

In the "Hotel California" exhibit, large-scale color photos from Hilger will be shown alongside photos and ephemera from the files of the Ambassador Archive, an online project of Hilger and collaborator Annie Shaw.

The exhibit opens on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012 and will run through Saturday, Jan. 28. A vernissage will be held in connection with the exhibit on Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m.

For those unaware of the hotel's historical significance: It was the site of several Academy Awards ceremonies in the 1930s and 1940s. It later became perhaps better known, nationally, as the site of Robert Kennedy's assassination of June 1968. The Ambassador was demolished in 2006.

Hilger directs the photography program with the Newcomb Art Department at Tulane's Uptown campus in the Crescent City.

Volunteer photographers sought for NOLA JazzFest 2012

As it has for many years, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archive is accepting applications for volunteer photographers, this time for the 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

The deadline for application is Saturday, Dec. 31. However, the number of applications that can be considered by the volunteer program's jury is 150, so earlier application is advisable, for those interested in participating.

According to the Foundation, the purpose of the volunteer initiative is to document the 2012 JazzFest, which will be held at the Fair Grounds Race Course over two spring weekends, April 27-29 and May 3-6.

Volunteers will be selected in three categories, including student, amateur and professional. Participants must be at least 18 years old. All applications will be reviewed by a four-person jury consisting of one member of the Foundation's board of directors and three volunteer photographer/curators.

The Foundation notes that selected photographers will be asked to use their own gear, if selected. They are also told to understand that their volunteer work will be physically demanding, given that photographers walk many miles a day around the Fair Grounds, whether in rain (an at-least semi-regular festival feature, along with ensuing mud), blaring sun and heat and humidity.

Selected volunteer photographers will be responsible for providing the Archive with a CD or DVD of the images taken at the festival, along with a complete index of images on the disc. The photographers selected will ultimately own all images taken, but with the understanding that they may be used by the Foundation to promote its programs, including the JazzFest.

Ogden Museum of Southern Art names new director for 2012

William Pittman Andrews, now serving as the director of the University of Mississippi Museum and Historic Houses in Oxford, Miss., will begin a new role in January 2. 2012, as director of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans.

Andrews, 41, has been at Ole Miss since 2009. While director, Andrews oversaw a 35 percent increase in attendance at the museum. He produced such high-profile exhibitions as a survey of Gee's Bend quilts, while strengthening the presence of the museum's permanent collections in classical antiquities, American art and folk art from the American South.

"We are thrilled to have found someone with William's enormous energy and vision, as well as his deep knowledge of Southern art," said Julia Reed, chair of the Ogden Museum's board of trustees. "We are looking forward to his leading the Museum into the next phase by expanding the museum's already excellent programming, as well as its resources."

According to the Ogden, Andrews' guiding principle has been to place the museum at the center of a participatory public culture, and offer "the museum as a place where people come to do things and to interact with each other, not just to look at things."

Andrews says that he is looking forward to leading the institution into its second decade. The Ogden, he suggests, should be mentioned in the same conversations with such museums as Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which have displayed an interest in how Southern art fits into the broad category of American art. He specifically mentioned a Whitney Museum exhibit of William Eggleston works, "Democratic Camera - Photographs and Video, 1961-2008," an an example of this.

Meanwhile, the upcoming director has plans to originate traveling exhibitions from the Ogden, ones that confront the nature of Southern art, while promoting its presence in contemporary discussions about art in America.

Prior to joining the University of Mississippi Museums, Andrews was at Mississippi State University, where he was the project manager of its Visual Arts Center. He was a founding member, board of directors at the Starkville (Miss.) Area Arts Council, the gallery director for and adjunct instructor with the university's College of Art, Architecture, Art and Design, founder of the post-Katrina Mississippi Museum Fund and Mississippi Gulf Coast Art Rescue, and owner of Starkville's Main Street Gallery.

He is a native of Starkville, Miss., the home of Mississippi State.

He graduated from Mississippi State a bachelor's degree in painting and sculpture in 1993, and received his Master of Fine Arts there as well, in electronic visualization.

Oak Alley photo contest deadline is New Year's Eve 2011

Vacherie, La.'s Oak Alley Plantation, the "Grand Dame of the Great River Road," is seeking entrants for its 2011 photo contest. It is a contest that is open to virtually any and all, on the condition that all submitted photos must have been taken at Oak Alley in 2011.

Photos from four categories will be judged separately, including: age 15 and under, amateurs 16 and over, semi-professional photographers, and professional photographers. The contest is thus open to all ages. It is open to people of all nationalities as well. Even previous Oak Alley photo contest winners may enter.

The deadline for entry is Saturday, Dec. 31.

Otherwise, the Louisiana institution seeks photos that are original and imaginative, as well as technically well executed.

The prizes in each category are:

First Place: Two photos books, "Capturing Oak Alley" and "Oak Alley Plantation Cooking," as well as a copy of a 2012 e-book of Oak Alley photographs.
Second Place: "Capturing Oak Alley," along with the 2012 e-book.
Honorable Mentions: A free copy of the 2012 e-book.

All proceeds will benefit the non-profit Oak Alley Foundation, and educational trust which manages and maintains the Vacherie mansion and its famously lush, sprawling grounds.

Sugar community of Iberia Parish focus of Armentor exhibit

Photographs from NOPA member David Armentor that focus on Iberia Parish, La.'s once-vibrant sugar-producing community are currently on exhibit at the Cole Pratt Gallery, located at 3800 Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans. The exhibit began on Tuesday, Nov. 29 and will run through Saturday, Dec. 31.

The gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibit, "The Sugar Mill Sessions," on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The gallery describes "The Sugar Mill Sessions" as Armentor's attempt to provide a contemporary view of the local sugar-producing industry in Iberia Parish by documenting the work at three mills during harvest seasons, as well as by shadowing a family of sugar cane growers whose roots in the sugar community are seven generations deep.

The exhibit is being held in conjunction with the sixth annual PhotoNOLA, New Orleans' festival of photography, an event coordinated by the Photo Alliance, in association with galleries, museums and photographers citywide.

Entry deadline extended for 'Name That Country Road'

Country Roads Magazine, a publication that focuses on the culture and places of the Great River Road region between New Orleans and Natchez MS, has extended the entry deadline to Saturday, Dec. 10 for its "Name that Country Road: A Louisiana Photographic Project," a series to run in the magazine's print and online editions in 2012. The magazine's staff also hopes to put together a poster that features all 12 images from the series at a later date.

The original deadline was Wednesday, Nov. 30.

The editors are asking for photos of, as you might guess, the region's country roads. However, photos of lanes, waterways or other thoroughfares that do not fall under the definition of "road" can be submitted as well.

The magazine's series will not only feature photo work, but profiles of the photographers responsible for the work. One photo, and an accompanying profile, will run per month.

Country Roads editors suggest that the features are to offer hints of the location of the road (or waterway, lane, or the like) in question, then invite readers to suggest where the photograph might have been taken.

Meanwhile, photographers whose work is selected for the series will be asked for permission to use their photo on a poster, one that would be sold throughout 2013 and advertised in the magazine. Country Roads will offer an initial $100 for each photograph selected on a first print run of 1,000 posters, then divide 20 percent of revenue between participating photographers on all sales thereafter.

Participating photographers would retain copyright ownership of their work.

Interested photographers are invited to submit up to three images (at 150 dpi, 6" x 4", in jpeg format) by email to the photos@countryroadsmag.com. Entrants must include the phrase "Name That Country Road" in the subject line.

CURRENTS 2011 opens at at Crescent City Brewhouse Dec. 5

The New Orleans Photo Alliance, in conjunction with the Crescent City Brewhouse, is pleased to present, "CURRENTS 2011," a NOPA members showcase. This portfolio-based exhibition, curated by Richard McCabe of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, will feature works by twelve members.

The exhibit will be on view at the Crescent City Brewhouse in the French Quarter from Monday, Dec. 5 through Monday, Jan. 2. The opening reception takes place on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, from 5-7 p.m. Complimentary draft beer and hors d'oeuvres will be served.

The exhibit is a highlight of PhotoNOLA, New Orleans' festival of photography, an event coordinated by the Photo Alliance, in in partnership with galleries, museums and other venues citywide.

NOPA members with work in the exhibit include: Renee Allie, Susan Barnett, Laura Burlton, Charles Franklin, Carolyn Hampton, Maria Levitsky, Hannah Neal, Don Norris, Valorie Polmer, Mary Quin, S. Gayle Stevens and Warren Thompson.

The Crescent City Brewhouse, the French Quarter's only microbrewery, is located at 527 Decatur Street in New Orleans.

Juror McCabe, the Curator of Photography at Crescent City's Ogden Museum, said: “I am always amazed at the quality and diversity of the work that is promoted and nurtured through the Photo Alliance and PhotoNOLA. As a curator, the Photo Alliance has become a great resource for familiarizing myself with the work of photographers not only here in New Orleans, but from around the U.S. and the world.”

McCabe chose 69 images for the members showcase, from twelve artists whose work he saw as reflecting the wide range of styles, techniques, and subject matter seen in contemporary art photography.

'Silenced Suffering,' opens at NOPA gallery on Thurs., Dec. 1

The New Orleans Photo Alliance will present Jungeun Lee's "Silenced Suffering," an exhibit which metaphorically examines the experiences of Korean women subjected to sexual slavery during World War II, at its Lower Garden District gallery, beginning Thursday, Dec. 1. The exhibit will run through Jan. 29, 2012.

The exhibit is being held in connection with PhotoNOLA, the Crescent City's photography festival, a series of events and exhibits coordinated by NOPA, in partnership with galleries, museums and other venues citywide.

Lee won the 2010 PhotoNOLA Review Prize, which is given each year at the conclusion of the festival's portfolio review.

The opening reception for "Silenced Suffering: The Comfort Women Project," will take place at the NOPA gallery on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 6-9 p.m. The gallery is located at 1111 St. Mary Street in New Orleans’ Lower Garden District. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m., and otherwise by appointment.

Lee will also speak about her work during the "Picturing War" panel discussion at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.

According to Melanie McWhorter, the Book Division manager for photo-eye, "This project does not deal with the descriptive nature of this unfortunate time in these women’s lives, but it is Jungeun Lee’s attempt at an emphathic connection to the emotional torture that these women would have initially experienced and continued to experience throughout their lives.”

Lee is a native of South Korean. She received a B.E. from Hoseo University in South Korea and a MFA in Photography from University of North Texas in Denton DX. She learned about the "comfort women" during her time at North Texas. She spent all three years of her graduate career researching and making work about this history.She currently lives and works in Dallas.

NOMA talk focuses on museum's Centennial and future

The New Orleans Museum of Art will host a talk with NOMA Director Emeritus John Bullard on Friday evening. as its last Directors Dialogue of 2011. He will talk about changes in the operating environment for museums, and examine these within the context of the Crescent City institution's celebration of its Centennial, while looking toward its future.

The museum celebrates its 100th birthday on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011.

Bullard's talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. A live video stream will be shown at NOMA's website.

EXPOSURE competition offers NYC/Paris stay, cash awards

The popular vote winner of a portfolio competition in the 3rd Annual EXPOSURE Competition, a project of the Artists Wanted organization of New York, will receive an unusually lavish gift--for a photo competition, at least: A "Dream Getaway" vacation to New York and Paris, in addition to a $2,500 cash grant.

The competition's 2011 People's Choice Awards Package will, more specifically, include a stay in a loft apartment in Brooklyn's Dumbo neighborhood during the New York Photo Festival in May 2012, and a one-week stay in Paris.

Some $50,000 in prizes will be awarded to winners in the competition, in total. The grand prize winner of the juried component of the awards will receive a $10,000 grant and an exhibit at The Aperture Foundation Gallery in New York. Meanwhile, photographers of all backgrounds will have a shot at receipt of $18,500 in cash grants.

Submissions for the competition may be submitted at the awards website.

The "standard entry" deadline for Exposure 2011 is Wednesday, Nov. 30th, 2011. Submissions will continue to be accepted through the Final Entry Deadline of Sunday, Dec. 20, but late fees may apply. Entrants may submit up to eight images for $10 per image. A discounted rate of $88 is offered for more than nine and up to 20 images.

Tickets available for PhotoGALA fundraiser, set for Dec. 8

Tickets are now available for the New Orleans Photo Alliance's annual PhotoGALA Benefit Party and Auction, scheduled for the evening of Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Musee Conti Historical Wax Museum in the French Quarter.

Tickets are $20, and may be purchased through the website of PhotoNOLA, the Crescent City's annual festival of photography. Tickets will be $25 at the door.

The auction and benefit will be a highlight of this year's sixth annual festival, which will include a series of workshops, lectures and porfolio reviews from Thursday, Dec. 8. through Sunday, Dec. 11, and exhibitions to run through the month of December 2011.

PhotoGALA is scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m., with a live auction beginning at 8 p.m. The auction is to be feature works by renowned photographers including Jock Sturges, Thomas Neff, Lori Vrba, John Chervinsky, Louviere+Vanessa, Lori Waselchuk, Josephine Sacabo and Richard Sexton.

Examples of the work being auctioned are shown below. A full preview can be found at the PhotoNOLA website.

All proceeds will benefit the Photo Alliance, a non-profit organization created in 2006 to create unity and opportunity for photographers in the Gulf South region.

The event is not just an auction, however. Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns will be providing the music for the evening, for instance. Meanwhile, locally brewed beer will be served, compliments of NOLA Brewery, while hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Jazz Sushi, Whole Foods, Jacques-Imo's and La Divina Gelateria.

“Gala guests can eat, drink, and dance, bid on fantastic photographs, and feel good about the fact that all this fun will support the year-round programming initiatives of the New Orleans Photo Alliance,” said NOPA President Sesthasak Boonchai.

The deadline for a second PhotoPlace competition, "The Four Seasons," is Monday, Dec. 12. The entry fee for either competition is $25 for five photos, and $6 for each additional photo.

The Vermont gallery will exhibit winning selections for "On the Road" from January 7 to February 11, 2012. "The Four Seasons" exhibit is to follow, from February 14 to March 5.

If you have any photographs of the main structure at the Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots of New Orleans, colloquially known as the New Orleans Fair Grounds, an unnamed, major insurance company may be willing to pay you for them. More accurately, it will pay for the right photos.

The insurance company seeks photos of the structure, which includes the grandstand and paddock area, as it existed before Hurricane Katrina in 2005, as well as how it existed in the wake of the storm and flooding. It further seeks photos that show the facility after repair and reconstruction.

Cycling photo educator leading photo tips seminar on Dec. 5

Coming to the New Orleans Photo Alliance gallery on Monday, Dec. 5: Free photo classes, geared toward beginners and hobbyists, as well as wedding and portrait photography professionals. They will be led by Khara Plicanic, a wedding photographer, speaker and author from Lincoln, Neb., who is now at the beginning stages of what she is calling The [Un]Tour.

The tour that is to take her some 3,100 miles, from San Diego to St. Augustine, Fla. She will lead seminars in eight cities along the way.

Also of note: She is doing all this traveling by bicycle, in stretches of 50 to 75 miles a day.

You read that correctly. She is attempting to cross the entirety of the Southeast and Southwest of the United States, by bicycle. (She is show below with web developer Emir Plicanic, who doubles as her cycling partner and husband.)

By no means do you have to be into cycling--or skilled in carbohydrate loading for eight-hour excursions, an old hand with fixing flat tires, or what have you--to join the couple in the Crescent City, nor do you have to be an experienced photographer. You do not even have to own a remotely advanced camera. There will, however, be a class aimed at experienced, professional photographers.

The NOPA gallery classes, scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5, will include:

"Wickedly Fast Wedding Workflow," set for 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The decidedly immodest goal of this class is to show participants how to finish editing wedding photographs, as well as design a wedding photo album, in only six to eight hours. Plicanic suggests that the class lessons can be easily adapted for portrait photography.
"10 Tips for Instantly Better Photos," set for 7 to 8 p.m.. This is the seminar aimed at beginners to advanced hobbyists. According to Plicanic, the aim here is to educate and inspire, and to let people know that they can take great photos with whatever camera they have.

The NOPA gallery is located at 1111 St. Mary Street in New Orleans' Lower Garden District.

Plicanic has led classes and workshops on photography for many years, including ones held at events such as the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) conventions and trade shows. She is the author of a photo guide, Your Camera Loves You: Learn to Love it Back, recently published by Peachpit Press, a division of Pearson Education. Peachpit is a publishing partner for the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPA), Adobe Systems and Apple, among other organizations.

NOPA Member Lynda Frese will discuss her work "Pacha Mama: earth realm," at talks in New Orleans and Lafayette LA over the next couple of weeks, while an exhibit of her work is to be hosted by the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayete.

The New Orleans talk will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Swan River Yoga, located at 2940 Canal St. in Mid-City. The event will also feature a reading by "Pacha Mama" contributor and yogi Michele Baker.

Meanwhile, an opening reception for her exhibit in Lafayette will be held at Acadiana Center on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m, with an artist talk and book signing set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

At this event, Frese will talk about her book and share images from the Amazon rainforest region that shaped the environmental themes of her work. She will also discuss her use egg tempera paints over her collaged photographs.

Frese's book features 35 of her own artworks, including photographs, along with essays, prayers and poems, by contributors including Baker. The book is meant to invite readers to consider ways of living harmoniously with nature.

Texas Woman's University's Department of Visual Arts is seeking submissions for its 11th Annual Joyce Elain Grant Photography Exhibition,which will be held February 21 to March 28, 2012 at the university's campus in Denton TX. The deadline for entry is Sunday, Nov. 6.

The exhibit juror is Anne Lyden, a curator with the photography department at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Entries are being accepted online. All exhibit proceeds will support scholarships for graduate students in photography.

French Market District seeking entrants for photo contest

New Orleans' French Market District is seeking what is is calling "quirky, quaint, and quintessential" photos of its site--the oldest public market in the United States--for an inaugural photo contest. The deadline for entry is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011.

Winning photographs of the French Market contest will be exhibited at the site from Nov. 17, when its annual tree lighting is held, through the end of the year.

All winners will be granted gift certificates that can be exchanged at the district's restaurants and shops, totaling $300 for the first prize winner, $200 for second prize, and $100 for third prize. The certificates will be good for use through December 31, 2011.

RayKo seeks entries for 5th Annual Int'l Plastic Camera Show

The RayKo Photo Center of San Francisco CA has issued call for entry for its 5th Annual International Plastic Camera Show, a juried competition open to all artists who use plastic cameras with plastic lenses--as in, Holga, Lomo and Diana cameras or similarly humble, but occasionally mighty hunks of, well, plastic.

NOPA Blog readers should note that organizers say that more obsolete, flawed and "lo-tech" the cameras used for submissions are, "the better."

The deadline for the juried competition is Friday, Nov. 25.

The competition is open to all photographers. All work must be taken with plastic cameras that have plastic lenses, as suggested above, and must be original. Works previously shown at the RayKo center are ineligible for entry.

The best of show winner will receive a $350 cash prize.

The awards are open to all professional and amateur photographers. The basic, single image entry fee is $35. A ten percent discount on all entries is still available for members of photography societies, associations and clubs, including the New Orleans Photo Alliance.

Lockwood offers nature and wildlife workshops for Fall 2011

Baton Rouge-based photographer C.C. Lockwood has set dates and locations for his Fall 2011 photo workshops, including nature and wildlife photography-focused ones in Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin and the Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area near St. Francisville.

The workshops each will be held over three separate days. First, the lectures for both workshops will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3 , while critique sessions are set for Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The tuition for each is $290, including field trip, lecture, and critique sessions. They will focus on digital photography.

The field trips will be held on the following Saturdays:

November 5: A field trip in Tunica Hills area, which will include a hike on various trails to an area filled with waterfalls and fall foliage.
November 12: An outing in the the Atchafalaya Basin, which will involve traveling through the wetlands by boat.

Lockwood has dedicated his career to environmental photography, and has focused on areas including the Louisiana wetlands as well as the rugged countryside of the American West. He has been a recipient of the Sierra Club's Ansel Adams Award for conservation photography.

Studio in the Woods exhibit begins at Tulane's Carroll Gallery

Jeff Rosenheim, photography curator for New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, will lead a discussion this Friday, Sept. 30, on works of photographer Lee Friedlander that are now on exhibit at the Uptown campus of Tulane University in New Orleans.

The discussion, which will focus on Friedlander's Mid-20th Century photos of Crescent City jazz figures, will begin at the Newcomb Gallery at 3 p.m.

Rosenheim earned a master's degree from the Newcomb art program at Tulane in 1986. He has since organized exhibitions on Friedlander, as well as Walker Evans, Robert Polidori, Diane Arbus, and Thomas Eakins, among others.

The exhibit, curated by Newcomb Assistant Professor Stephen Hilger, features 39 black and white photographs. Included are photos featuring musicians such as "Sweet Emma" Barrett, Joe James, and George Lewis, along with images of the city's eternally vibrant street parades and other celebrations. The works are mainly drawn from Tulane's William Ransom Hogan Archive of New Orleans Jazz.

The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) will present a seminar on photography sales, "Strictly Business 3," by Blake Discher, on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the Professional Color Service offices in Metairie.

Ruth photos in Miss. Delta art event Saturday, Oct. 1

NOPA Member and photographer Euphus Ruth will be one of four artists to have work featured in "Chasing Aphrodite," an event dedicated to studies of the nude female form, set for the evening of Saturday, Oct. 1 in the Mississippi Delta town of Leland MS.

The exhibit is to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the offices of the Leland Progress newspaper, at 113 Third Street in Leland. It is being sponsored by HobNop, an art, pottery and antiques shop in Leland.

Ruth, who has lived in the Delta for the past three decades, is a self-taught photographer who has focused exclusively on black and white film and collodion wetplate photography. He uses vintage cameras and lenses. You can see more of his work at his website and at Flickr.

Frese talks on 'Pacha Mama' book set for Oct.-Dec.

NOPA Member Lynda Frese will discuss her work "Pacha Mama: earth realm," at several talks over the next few months in New Orleans, culminating with a talk associated with the PhotoNOLA festival of photography in December.

The talks, slide shows and book signings will be held on the following dates. All will feature Frese and "Pacha Mama" contributor and yogi Michele Baker:

Friday, Oct. 6, at Press Street's Antenna Gallery in the Bywater, beginning at 6 p.m. (3160 Burgundy St.)

Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Swan River Yoga in Mid-City (2940 Canal St.), beginning at 7 p.m.

Frese's book features 35 of her own artworks, including photographs, along with essays, prayers and poems, by contributors including Baker. Sacabo works on exhibit in NOLA, beginning Oct. 1

A Gallery for Fine Photography of New Orleans will present work from NOPA member Joséphine Sacabo, beginning Saturday, Oct. 1 and running through the remainder of 2011. The exhibition will include hand-made photogravures from three series, including "Con Los Ojos (Hear Me With Your Eyes)," "Noche Oscura (Dark Night)" and "Water & Dreams."

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 1, at the gallery, located at 241 Chartres Street in the French Quarter.

Ariaz works featured in Jacksonville FL group show

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville FL is exhibiting works from NOPA member and photographer Jeremiah Ariaz, an assistant professor of Art at Louisiana State University, beginning today, Friday, Sept. 16. The photographs are featured as part of a group show, "No Place in Particular: Images of the American Landscape."

An opening reception will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the museum on Friday in connection with the PhotoJax, billed as the inaugural photography festival for the Jacksonville area. Among other works featured at the museum are photographs from Larry Clark, Walker Evans, Alec Soth and Sally Mann, among others.

As noted recently on the NOPA blog, photographer Thomas Roma will be appearing this week the Uptown campus of Tulane University, in connection with an exhibit of his work, "Pictures for Books," at the campus' Newcomb Art Gallery.

He will take part in first a conversation about the creative process, billed as the "Making Books Symposium," beginning today--Wednesday, Sept. 14--from 3:30 to 5 p.m. p.m. at the Freeman Auditorium of the university's Woldenberg Art Center.

He is to lead a walk-through of the exhibit at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15.The following photos were shown on the front covers of the books to be discussed today, and which are the focus of the exhibit. The associated book titles are listed under each photograph.

Waselchuk lecture, book signing in Philly on Oct. 1

Documentary photographer and NOPA member Lori Waselchuk is to give a lecture, as well as sign copies of her book on the inmate hospice system in Louisiana, at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The lecture is to begin at 6 p.m. The book-signing will follow, from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Waselchuk's book, "Grace Before Dying," focuses on the inmate hospice system of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. However, there is a widespread, continuing pattern of law enforcement officers ordering people to stop taking photographs or video in public places, and harassing, detaining and arresting those who fail to comply. The ACLU, photographer's groups, and others have been complaining about such incidents for years — and consistently winning in court. Vid series opens with Sept. 11 photographer Q&A

Pulitzer Prize-winning photo editor and NOPA member Stella Kramer has launched a new, photography-oriented Internet video series, "In the Loupe," with colleagues Julie Grahame and Allegra Wilde. The series opener is an interview with John Botte, a New York police detective, about photos he took in the hours and days immediately following the Sept. 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center.

The videos can be accessed through the In the Loupe blog, as well the video-sharing website Vimeo.

Competition fees to benefit flooded Vermont museum

Something NOPA members should be able to relate to, especially when making preparations for Tropical Storm Lee for the Labor Day weekend:

The PhotoPlace Gallery of Middlebury, VT, which survived Hurricane Irene, is planning to use a portion of proceeds from submissions to an upcoming juried photo competition to help a fellow art institution,the Main Street Museum of White River Junction VT. The museum, described by PhotoPlace as an alternative museum of material culture, was inundated with six feet of water from Irene-related flooding. The water destroyed museum storage areas, as well as supplies and its parking lot.

The deadline for the competition "Reflections in Photography," is Monday, Sept. 19. Images are sought that involve reflection--not the consideration or meditative type, but the sort resulting from light that bounces off reflective surfaces.

The entry fee is $25 for the first five submission, with $6 for each additional image submitted.

Other PhotoPlace photography competitions, including ones focusing on surrealist and travel photography, have deadline of October 17 and November 14, respectively. For more information, please see the gallery's website.

Dickerson essay offers unique look at post-K NOLA

Unique Katrinaversary Reading and Imagery Note: Even if you have long since grown weary of looking at Katrina-related disaster photography and related stories, NOPA member Nell Dickerson's post-Katrina recollections and gallery at NOLA Defender, "The Calm After," should be more than worth a look.

In the essay and the gallery, Dickerson focuses squarely on people and a bit of architectural history in a November 2006 walk through the French Quarter and Treme, as well as a search for Perseverance Hall.

Dickerson, an architect as well as a photographer, conducted building assessments for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in 2005, after Katrina.

12 12 Gallery competition early deadline is Sept. 1

The 12 12 Gallery of Richmond VA is calling for entries to its International Juried Competition 2011. The early entry deadline for submissions is Thursday, Sept. 1, with an extended deadline of Thursday, Sept. 15.

The difference between the deadlines? Entry fees. Each entrant will pay a non-refundable $25 entry fee for three images submitted before the early deadline, with up to two additional entries costing $5 each. After September 1, the entry fee for the first three images will be $30, with the additional image fee kept at $5.

The competition is open to artists worldwide, who are working in any photographic process--and, a small detail here, at least 18 years old.

The juror for the 12 12 competition is Amalia Pizzardi, founder and director of The Gallery Art and Design of Mexico, Italy and the United States.

The best-in-show winner will be granted a solo exhibition, and will receive up to $1000 in cash prizes.

Roma works exhibited at Tulane, beginning Aug. 24

Nearly 100 prints from four of the published works of photographer Thomas Roma will be exhibited at the Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University's Uptown campus, beginning Wednesday, August 24 and running through Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011. The exhibit, which features Roma's chronicling of urban life, is being curated by Susan Kismaric, a curator in the photography department of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Companion exhibits, featuring photographic works of Andy Warhol and Lee Friedlander will be held in conjunction with the Roma exhibition

An exhibit reception will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres and spirits will be served. Jazz will be performed at the reception by musicians from New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA).

Related programming will include the following events, both of which will be held at Tulane's Woldenberg Art Center, at the Uptown campus:

"Making Books Symposium," scheduled for 3:30 to 5 p.m. on September 14:, featuring Roma, Kismaric, and Phillip Lopate, and moderated by Tulane photography professor Stephen Hilger.

Poydras Home/NOPA show deadline is Sept. 18

The 17th Annual Poydras Home Art Show, in association with the New Orleans Photo Alliance, is accepting entries for its photography exhibit. All entries must be submitted via the NOPA website and, as noted there, can only be submitted after filling out an official "Entry Thingy" account.

The deadline for entry is Sunday, Sept. 18. The show will be held from Friday, Nov. 4, through Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011.

There will be a maximum of 30 photographers selected to be in this show. Approximately three photographs from each photographer will be chosen by a New Orleans Photo Alliance Selection Committee

One photograph will be chosen for the $500 best-in-show prize, selected by the 17th. Annual Poydras Home Art Show juror, John Bullard, director of the New Orleans Museum of Art. This photograph will also be featured on Peggy Scott Laborde’s "Steppin Out" show. which will air on Crescent City public television station WYES at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4.

There is no theme to this exhibit. Photographers working in any genre or style, or any theme or technique, are eligible for entry.

Some other things to know about the competition:

Juried photographers will be listed at the Poydras Home’s Web site, complete with links to their web sites (added marketing and publicity)
Juried photographers will be listed in the NOPA Art Show Patron Party invitation, one that is to be mailed to over 1500 patrons and friends. They will also be listed on a NOPA art show postcard announcement, one to be mailed to over 5000 art lovers and friends of Poydras.
Art show announcements are to be delivered to over 30 major hotel concierge desks in the French Quarter, as well as the Central Business District and Uptown.
The show will also be advertised in St. Charles Avenue Magazine, New Orleans Magazine ,and Gambit Weekly.

There will be a Tea and Ethics lecture, "The Ethics of Disaster" at 5:30PM, presented by The VESTIGES Project Co-founder and Director of VESTIGES: THINK TANK, Jan Gilbert. Gallery talk with artists directly following Tea and Ethics lecture.

After the floods post-Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, many artists were unable to return to the area. “Trinitas” brings together displaced New Orleans artists with members of their former community both presenting individual works as well as a large-scale, wetlands-inspired wall installation assembled as the result of a call for submissions initiated and configured by Jan Gilbert and Debra Howell of The VESTIGES Project of New Orleans including the work of 50 artists. The overall response from participants, both those forced to relocate post-Katrina and those remaining in New Orleans, expresses relief in this opportunity to reflect upon the call for submissions seeking small baggies filled with the artistʼs own vestiges: traces of objects or items that are missed.

Michele White, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Tulane University and participant in VESTIGES Projects writes in her exhibition narrative titled Re: collecting Vestiges “in such installations, the trace acts as both an aesthetic and political process. It allows VESTIGES members to reference multiple pasts and to present the remaining parts of homes and lives so that they can be used to think about our social arrangements and city. While interactive exhibitions in which objects can be touched and rearranged may be familiar artistic strategies, their employment by VESTIGES members resonates in New Orleans where the aspects of daily life, home, business, government, and archive recently had to be, and in many cases still need to be, remade.”

“This exhibition is intended to gather participating artists for reflection, and discussion with our coastal community in celebration of hope, progress, and the importance of our communalities” says Rachel Harris-Beck, exhibitions coordinator for The Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery. “We are proud to be involved in a project which will reunite communities, develop new perspectives, and explore progress made despite tragedy and moments of despair” she states.

The Vestiges Project is an ongoing collaborative of New Orleans artists and writers formed in 1984 in New Orleans that focuses on investigating the interconnection of image and text and producing works that transcend exclusively visual or verbal modes of communication and perception.

In addition, New Orleans native Jan Gilbert of The VESTIGES Project will present “The Ethics of Disaster” a lecture discussing how artists collaborate to produce work even after their community is destroyed and separated by disaster, hosted by The Jackson Center Tea and Ethics program. Spider Awards' 2-for-1 entry deadline is August 26

The 7th Annual Black and White Spider Awards, an international competition for black and white photography, is offering two-images-for-the-price-of-one entry fees for individuals who submit their work by the early entry deadline of Friday, Aug. 26.

An additional 10 percent will be taken off for members of photographic organizations, including the New Orleans Photo Alliance. The regular single-photo entry fee is $35 for professionals, and $30 for amateurs, who are not members of any photo societies or groups. "Professional" is defined for the awards as anyone whose sole occupation and full income derives exclusively from photography, while "amateur" is defined as everyone else.

Less generous discounts will still be available for entrants who make the competition's early closing deadline of Friday, Oct. 21. You can read more about these at the festival website. The final deadline is Friday, Dec. 16

The competition includes 132 title awards. The awards show will be broadcast online on Sunday, May 15, 2012.

NY Photo Festival seeks entries for 'Audio/Visual'

The New York Photo Festival, working in association with United Photo Industries, is asking for submissions to Audio/Visual, a juried exhibition that will focus on photography involving music and musicians, something most any photographer who has taken shots in and around New Orleans and the surrounding region should have in nearly excessive quantities

The competition is open to any photographer. Submissions will be accepted until Monday, Sept. 19. The entry fee is $25.

The exhibit will be held at the PowerHouse Arena in Brooklyn's Dumbo neighborhood, from Wednesday, Oct. 19 to Thursday, Nov. 3.

The festival organizers say that they are looking for images that capture what they call the unique relationship between photography and music. Submissions can be works involving solo musicians, bands, rock concerts, operatic productions, or small, intimate performances.

The Fort Collins, Colorado-based Center for Fine Art Photography is calling for entries for a juried exhibition, "Dreams," that will open in December 2011. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, Aug. 9.

The exhibition will begin on Dec. 20, 2011 and run through Jan. 7, 2012.

The juror for "Dreams" is Aline Smithson, the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks magazine. Her photographs have been featured in publications including the PDN Photo Annual, Communication Arts Photo Annual, Artworks and many others.

Spanish photo festival competition seeks entrants

The Guillem Viladot Private Foundation and Emergent-Lleida '11, a photography festival held in the Lleida in the Catalonia region of Spain, is seeking submissions for its first-ever international competition.

The deadline for entry into the Lo Pardal First International Competition is Wednesday, July 20.

The selected works will be exhibited on the facade--to be clear, on the exterior, not the interior--of the Guillem Viladot de Agramunt Foundation building in Agramunt, Spain. The exhibit will begin on Saturday, Oct. 8 and run through Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011.

Any emergent artist of any nationality is eligible to submit work. The photographs must be submitted in digital format through the Emergent-Lleida website. Entrants may not enter more than one project for consideration.

The organization will announce the winner before July 31 through the festival website.

'Generation LA' opens at NOPA gallery on Saturday

"Generation LA," a new exhibit that features work from emerging Louisiana photographers and graduate students, will open on Saturday, July 9, at the New Orleans Photo Alliance gallery. The exhibit will run through Sunday, Sept. 18.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. It will take place at the NOPA gallery, located at 1111 St. Mary Street in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans.

The photographers with featured work include Shannon Kolvitz, who recently completed his Master of Fine Arts in photography at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

The other photographers with featured work include NOPA members Joli Livaudais Grisham, who is working on an MFA at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, and Kelly C. Tate, a graduate student LSU who will receive her MFA this summer.

NOPA Accepting Submissions for $5000 Clarence John Laughlin Award

The New Orleans Photo Alliance (NOPA) is pleased to announce its offering of an annual $5000 award to recognize and reward a fine art photographer who is creating or has completed a significant body of photographic work.

The Clarence John Laughlin Award was created by the New Orleans Photo Alliance to support the work of photographers who use the medium as a means of creative expression. It honors the life and work of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985), a New Orleans photographer best known for his surrealist images of the American South. The Clarence John Laughlin Award grants one $5000 prize annually to a photographer whose work exhibits sustained artistic excellence and creative vision.

George Slade, Curator for Photographic Resource Center, will serve as this year’s juror.

PPLA holds state convention in NOLA this summer

The Professional Photographers of Louisiana (PPLA) organization's state convention will be held at The Westin New Orleans Canal Place hotel in the Crescent City from Saturday, July 30 through Tues., Aug. 2.

Among the speakers at the convention will be Richard Sturdevant, who runs a portrait studio in suburban Dallas TX, and Gary and Pamela Box, who operate a portrait studio in the Tulsa OK area.

Bywater exhibit looks at Civil War in 'Grant v. Lee'

Good Children Gallery of New Orleans is presenting an exhibit of works that consider the American Civil War and its most famous generals through a contemporary lens. "Grant v. Lee," curated by NOPA member Sophie T. Lvoff, opened on Sat., June 11, and will run through Sunday, July 3.

The gallery is located at 4307 St. Claude Ave. in the Crescent City's Bywater neighborhood. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m.

Photography was granted priority for "Grant v. Lee," although art from other media are showcased. The stress on photography was decided upon in tribute to Matthew Brady, Timothy O’Sullivan and other photographers of the era whose work brought home the horror and carnage of the war to the nation. (Brady also just happened to take famous photos of Ulysses S. Grant, commander of the U.S. Army during the war, and Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederates' Army of Northern Virginia.)

According to organizers, the exhibit gently and subtly evoke the times and culture of the Civil War while bringing up questions regarding race and nationalism.

The Civil War is being remembered in official ceremonies and exhibits nationwide this year, since 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the war's beginning. The war began with the April 1861 Confederate attack on Ft. Sumter in the harbor of Charleston SC.

The Good Children exhibition features work by James Taylor Bonds, Jason Derouin, Chris Domenick, Markus Fiedler, Lindsay Foster, Harvey Loves Harvey, Rachel Jones, Erik Kiesewetter, Nikki Pressley, Nina Schwanse, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Grant Willing, Katherine Wolkoff and Agustina Woodgate.

Focus is on the line for Octavia juried exhibit

Octavia Art Gallery of New Orleans is calling for entries for a juried exhibition, "Drawing the Line," that is open to artists working in any medium, including film or digital media, as long as the focus is on lines. The deadline for entry is Friday, July 1.

To clarify, the focus of entries should be on lines, in case you misread that as "online."

The gallery suggests that, although drawing has been conventionally associated with pen, pencil and paper, artists have conceptually redefined the use of line via other materials and media.

"Drawing now encompasses film, computer screens, earth, walls, and materials ranging from sticks to pixels," the gallery's announcement noted. "The nature of drawing is not limited by media, nor is it characterized by a format."

The exhibit is to be held August 6-27 at the gallery, located at 4532 Magazine Street.

Crescent City artist Rebecca Rebouche will serve as the exhibit juror. There are no fees for entry. Individuals may submit up to five pieces, in digital format only, for consideration. Artists interested in submitting their work may request an application by writing art@octaviaartgallery.com.

Since 2004 The Darkroom has been a great place for photographers to connect and learn from each other, serving as a hub of dialogue and creativity.

The exhibitions, workshops and printing and framing services offered there will all be missed. As will the library, which gave us opportunity to sit on comfy couches and peruse wonderful books for education and inspiration. Many great conversations transpired at The Darkroom, over wine at art openings, during the workshops which brought an impressive roster of renowned photographers here to teach, or simply while popping in to pick up film and supplies.

Jock Sturges critique with NOPA members, 2010

Over the years, Charles has been a great friend, adviser and partner to the New Orleans Photo Alliance. It was the "Carnival" group show The Darkroom organized in February 2006 that initially reunited photographers after Hurricane Katrina, planting seeds which helped to form NOPA. The Darkroom hosted some of our earliest meetings while we were in the initial brainstorming phase, and some of our earliest programming events before we found a physical home. In 2010 Charles stepped up to serve as our treasurer, and we will miss him dearly in that capacity as well.

The doors will close at the end of June, when Charles and family will move to France. Please join us next Tuesday to raise a glass in celebration of his many contributions and wish him the best as he moves on to the next adventure.

Deadline for San Diego photo show is May 31

The Art of Photography Show, an international exhibition of photographic art in San Diego CA, is asking for submissions to its 7th annual show. The deadline for entry is Tuesday, May 31.

The judge for this year's exhibit is Anne Lyden, Associate Curator of Photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

The event will be held on August 13 through October 16, 2011, at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery in the city's Gaslamp Quarter. Organizers note that $10,000 in award money will be given to artists during the event. Moreover, organizers suggest that some 30,000 people are expected to view the exhibit over a nine-week period.

Organizers of the 17th Annual Poydras Home Art Show & Patron Party are asking photographers to save the event date: November 4-6, 2011. The event will include a juried exhibition, co-sponsored by the New Orleans Photo Alliance, with a $500 best-in-show prize.
