The Clarence John Laughlin Award was developed by the New Orleans Photo Alliance in 2010 to support the work of photographers who use the medium as a means of creative expression. It honors the life and work of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985), a New Orleans photographer best known for his surrealist images of the American South. The Clarence John Laughlin Award grants one $5000 prize annually to a photographer whose work exhibits sustained artistic excellence and creative vision.

WHERE PHOTOGRAPHY MEETS COLLAGE

Work by Collins Walker

New Orleans Photo Alliance proudly hosts the open call for artists working at the intersection of photography and collage for a Juried Exhibition. The call is open through May 5, 2024, and the exhibition participants will be selected by a group of prestigious arts professionals. The exhibition itself is installed in the gallery for June and July with an opening reception on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, from 5:30-8:00 pm as part of Kolaj Fest New Orleans.

The exhibition aims to show artwork that operates at the intersection of these two mediums. Selected artists will have their work exhibited in the New Orleans Photo Alliance Center, 7800 Oak Street, New Orleans.

Having spent 35 years as a biological scientist Don Norris knows a thing or two about the close examination of a subject; with his portfolio, Southern Vernacular he brings this same formalistic inquiry to his photographs of single southern buildings in a landscape.

Adam Davies Receives the 2015 Clarence John Laughlin Award

The New Orleans Photo Alliance (NOPA) is pleased to announce that Adam Davies is the recipient of the 2015 Clarence John Laughlin Award. Davies will receive the $5000 award for his photographic series Non-spaces: Industrial architecture of the Mid-Atlantic region, which explores points of intersection between architecture and the natural world. Davies’ photographs reflect a deep study of history, architecture, landscape and philosophy.

David Armentor is a local boy from New Iberia, or more specifically, Loreauville, LA—a town of 1000 on Lake Fausse Pointe, near Bayou Teche.  Of Cajun descent, David’s grandparents spoke French; but his parents did not, so consequently neither does he.  David describes his family as more musical than artistic, in fact at an early age David himself played the guitar, albeit “horribly” he says.
