COLOR FALLS DOWN: My photographs visually express the notion of transience and split cultural identity caused by the act of migration. I have been viewing this issue through the lens of my own personal history and cultural journey. My move from India to the United States in 1993 left me feeling that I do not belong fully to either culture - leaving me unable to anchor myself in any particular cultural framework.
This disconnection from both cultures has changed me. I feel I have a hybrid identity, a patching together of two cultures within one person. Photography has helped me bridge the gap between my two cultures while coming to terms with this dual nature. My digital photographs reflect the tension inherent in this dual nature, by juxtaposing fragmented images, family snapshots, and carefully staged imagery. - Priya Kambli
Book Details: Priya Kambli's body of work, Color Falls Down was awarded the Book Award through Photolucida's (Portland, Oregon) 2008 juried competition: Critical Mass. The aim of Critical Mass is to provide artists working in the media of photography and digital imaging "career-building opportunities and to promote the best emerging and mid-career artists working today." The book titled Color Falls Down, was published in 2010 and can be purchased at Antenna Gallery and online at priyakambli.com.
Artist Bio: I was born and raised in India. I moved to the United States at the age of 18 carrying my entire life in one suitcase weighing about 20 lbs. I began my artistic career in the States and my work has always been informed by my experience as a migrant. I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette and continued on to receive a Masters degree in Photography from the University of Houston. I am currently an Associate Professor of Art at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri.

Kathleen Robbins Talk @ Du Mois Tuesday
On Tuesday Dec 7th, Kathleen Robbins will present an artist talk at DuMois Gallery, “Into the Flatlands: Process and Imagery”. Light refreshments will be served at 5:30; talk with discussion to follow.
Into the Flatland explores familial obligation and our conflicted relationship with “home.” The photographs in this series were made during regular trips home to visit family over a period of five years. These are the people I love most in a place that I am deeply connected to. I chose to leave the Mississippi Delta for many of the same reasons anyone ever chooses to leave a rural area. This is land that my family has inhabited for generations, and I am pulled to this place in a way that I am not able to fully articulate. It is not my nostalgia alone that creates this longing; it is that of my mother and my mother’s mother.

Traviesa lecture at NOPA gallery on Tuesday
Jonathan Traviesa, winner of NOPA's inaugural, 2009 Michael P. Smith Fund for Documentary Photography (MPS Fund) grant, will present a lecture at the Alliance gallery in the Lower Garden District on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 7. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Crescent City photographer was awarded the $5,000 grant for his series of environmental portraits, “New Portraits in New Orleans”.
He is now using the grant to propel his portrait series in a new direction - to document the newest residents of New Orleans, ones who have helped rebuild and restructure the city. "This project has reinvigorated my life and place in New Orleans," Traviesa noted. "To find and document the various peoples and communities that are literally rebuilding the city, reshaping urban space, changing broken policy, and expanding the cultural fabric is overwhelming, in the best way."
Traviesa will speak about this new focus and show photographs made during the grant year at his lecture. The NOPA gallery is located at 1111 St. Mary St., just off of Magazine St. in the Lower Garden District. The event is free and open to the public. More information and images from his new series can be seen online.
Traviesa is a photographer and artist living in New Orleans since the late 1990s. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York. In 2005, The Times-Picayune named his Katrina photo-sign installation the best art show the year. He has been teaching Photoshop at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts since 2005 and is a founding member of The Front, an artist-run gallery founded in 2008.
