Help-Portrait seeking volunteers for Dec. 12 event
Michael McAndrew, a NOPA member and student at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, is asking people to join with him and other Crescent City photographers on a charitable project called Help-Portrait during the holiday season.
NOLA Help-Portait will be holding a portrait event on Sunday, Dec. 12 from noon to 5 p.m. at the New Orleans Musicians Union, located 2401 Esplanade Ave. Live music will be provided by students from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. A local chef will serve red beans and rice.
The efforts of Help-Portrait, an organization founded by Nashville-based photographer Jeremy Cowart, are undertaken by photographers, hair stylists, make-up artists, and other volunteers worldwide. The idea is to take portraits of people who wouldn't normally have access to or be able to afford the services of a professional photographer, and then to give them prints of the portraits.
Those who need prints, the effort organizers note, could be anyone, ranging from families with major medical expenses, families with sick children, the elderly, veterans, struggling performers, or families who never had the opportunity or funds to have a family portrait taken.
Photos taken in connected with Help-Portrait may not be used by photographers for their portfolios, websites, or put up for sale. For more information, you may write helpportraitnola@gmail.com, or contact McAndrew at nolaeventphoto@live.

HBO needing Borg-McEnroe in NOLA '79 shots
HBO Sports, which is producing a one-hour documentary on the classic, professional tennis rivalry between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe that is scheduled to air on cable network next spring, is looking for images and video from a match that the two played in New Orleans in 1979.
More specifically, the doc's producers are looking for photos or footage (as well as, if possible, radio coverage, a tournament brochure or program, or a ticket stub) from the match, which took place on March 24, 1979. It was a semi-final match, which McEnroe won 5-7, 6-1, 7-6.
The match was part of the New Orleans Tennis Festival, and was held at the Municipal Auditorium. A representative for HBO Sports noted that McEnroe and Borg have been interviewed for the documentary already, and that the men shared a story about something that happened during the match. Consequently, the producers need visuals to help tell the players' story.
If you hvae any information, you may write Helen Russell of HBO Sports at Helen.Russell@hbo.com or call (212) 512-8054.

Slideluck Potshow New Orleans II - call for submissions - DEADLINE MONDAY

Submit your work to SLPS New Orleans II! It will be a kickoff event for PhotoNOLA, New Orleans' annual festival of photography. Slideluck Potshow provides a venue for photojournalists, painters, fashion and fine-art photographers to present work alongside one another in a relaxed and spirited atmosphere. This slideshow will feature emerging and established photographers and artists. We are currently seeking cohesive, creative, and thought-provoking submissions.
Deadline: Monday, November 22nd, 2010 - midnight -- Please see the SLPS NO II submission page for more info and submission guidelines.
The theme for this slideshow is community. SLPS New Orleans Director, Andrea Caldwell, and Andy Levin, creator and curator of 100Eyes, an online photographic showcase featuring contemporary photography including documentary, art, and alternative photojournalism will be curating the show.
"Community": so chosen for its breadth of interpretation and relevance to our daily lives, or rather, the art of daily living.
We not only want to see communities, from the quotidian existence of a termite colony to the front row faces of the fashion world, we want to see work that ponders the idea of community. What comprises it? How is it maintained? Sustained? Preserved? How does it, or can it, grow? Deteriorate?
Those questions leads one to think about cause and effect... Communities are made up of individuals that exist in a physical world - How does an individual effect a community? It is true that one can't give someone or something more than they have - so how does preservation of the self relate to the whole? Or preservation of nature? Or how does nature, in general, effect a community? Of course, your submission needs not be comprehensive or representative of community; at the least, a grazing.
Only the first half of the slideshow will consist of themed work; the second half will include any and all types. Presentations are a maximum of 5 minutes each, but most are much shorter, and we recommend between 15-40 images. Work is accepted in digital format only. We encourage all types of media that can be presented within this framework, be it painting, sculpture, or installation art. However, they must be comprised mainly of still images - no film or video will be considered, although multimedia pieces using video as punctuation can be submitted. When presenting photographs, there are many ways to go about it. One should not be afraid of making thoughtful observations, creating narratives, combining live music, speaking, or even performing with images. We want to see good work, but it need not be safe. Show us work in progress, outtakes from a job or if that makes you uneasy, show us your absolute finest work, because we like that, too.
See SLPS NO I's slideshows here.
Slideluck Potshow is a non-profit arts organization that provides an opportunity for artists and arts-appreciators to gather around food, friends, and artwork. The evening begins with a couple hours of mingling and dining on the home-cooked delights of those who attend (as it's a potluck), then the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and a spectacular uniquely curated slideshow commences.

Frese, Varisco works showing in SWARM exhibit
Works from NOPA members including Lynda Frese and Michel Varisco are being exhibited at the Old Ironworks Gallery, located at 612 Piety Street in New Orleans' Bywater neighborhood, as part of a larger group exhibition called "Multi-Species Salon 3: SWARM: Hope in Blasted Landscapes." The show will run through Sunday, Dec. 5.
The exhibit formally opened on Saturday, Nov. 13. The exhibit is being held in connection, however, with the American Anthropological Association's 109th Annual Meeting, which begins today in the Crescent City and will run through Sunday, Nov. 21.
Several conference attendees have been invited to be "embedded art critics" for the exhibit, which will explore relations between humans and other creatures, as well as multi-species survival in the wake of disaster.
Frese will be exhibiting work from her "Pacha Mama: Earth Realm" series for the exhibit. Her works combine egg tempera painting with photography, and involve imagined religious iconography. The work is influenced by the Italian Renaissance and the Mayans' year 2012 prophecies regarding an apocalypse or end times.
Varisco, meanwhile, will be showing photos from "Fragile Land."

2010 Clarence John Laughlin Award Recipient
The New Orleans Photo Alliance (NOPA) is pleased to announce the winner of its first annual Clarence John Laughlin Award. Juror John Wood selected Charles Grogg as the recipient of the $5000 award, which was established to recognize and reward a fine art photographer who is creating or has completed a significant body of photographic work.John Wood writes:
“Charles Grogg’s photographs are hauntingly beautiful. And they are strange. But they are strange in a way that most “strange” photographs are not. There is no violence, no brutality, no shock, except the shock of authentic art, that shock that forces a viewer back again and again to look at them and keeps them as fresh on the one hundredth viewing as they were on the first.“
