Project New Orleans 2011: Working with Non-profits

From Momenta Workshops:
"In a city alive with positive energy and change, we chose the theme of "hope and recovery" for this workshop. While many of the homes have now been rebuilt and life for many residents has returned to normal, the city and the community are still effected emotionally and structurally. We consider each non-profit working in New Orleans a valuable addition to the city's continual growth, which is why we go back every year to keep giving back in an effort to help New Orleans thrive. This is not a Katrina workshop per say (correct spelling: per se) but a New Orleans workshop dedicated to helping this great city get back on its feet and show them we still care.
As a participant in this workshop, you will learn how to work with a non-profit or work on a photo story about a particular issue that affects non-profit development. We will be working on the ground with organizations ranging from animal rights, children's empowerment, community development, environmental issues and home rebuilding. You are tasked to build a story in just a few days that will help a community to grow and learn about themselves. While this seems daunting in just five days, it is always amazing how many beautiful images are produced at this workshop."
More info about the workshop is available here.
Level Three / Weekend: Working with Nonprofits

John Mack Collins Photo Equipment Sale

One of our members, John Mack Collins, unexpectedly passed away in March. He was a Covington based photographer who participated in the PhotoNOLA portfolio reviews in 2007 and 2008. John was a delightful human being who will be missed by those whose lives he touched. It was his wise suggestion that prompted us to institute the "Photographers Happy Hour" after the close of the portfolio review, offering a chance for us all to communally decompress after the intensity of the review sessions.

His wife is Nancy has organized an online "estate sale" of John's photography equipment, including:
Hasselblad H4D-50, MC Macro 4/120 lense, tilt/shift adapter, battery grip
Epson 9800 printer, rolling cases and other lenses as well, plus much very good paper for the Epson.

Call for Images of Gulf Oil Disaster
I'm wondering what you know about photographers shooting the oil disaster? Are there a lot of projects going on?
I'm going to blog about it tomorrow and wonder if you know any people working on the story. Especially from the point of view of fishermen and women, shrimpers, people rescuing injured wildlife, etc.
David Bram and I have been talking about this. We plan on setting up a website to act as a central place for photos of the disaster, and try to arrange a day where people fan out across the area to shoot. After I spent yesterday looking at over 200 photos I felt there was so much more to the story and couldn't believe more photographers were not going to document.
If you are photographing any aspects of the oil disaster unfolding in the Gulf right now please contact Stella to tell her about your project. info@stellakramer.com
