MPLS Photo Center: B/W call for entries

We ask: are the implications and meanings of black and white still central to photography's unique nature as a visual medium?

Submissions to this juried exhibition are limited only by your imagination and your photographic eye. Portraits, fashion, editorial, landscapes, documentary, conceptual - all of these genres, and others not named, are open for consideration.

Prints should take whatever form they need to in order to represent the continuum of gray tones that comprise your photographs. Whether the initial recording was made on film or pixels is immaterial. However, in the final assessment, prints will be judged on their merits. Qualities of form, content, and relation to traditions of black-and-white printing and visualization will be sought in the pool of submissions.

Entry Fee: $35 up to 5 images; $10 each additional (no limit on number that may be submitted)
Prizes: $300 for 1st; $200 for 2nd; $100 for 3rd
Entries Due: July 23, 2010
Notice of Acceptance: August 2, 2010

Photoshop CS5 release

As if you didn't already know about it, Adobe is releasing Photoshop CS5 within days. It will probably be a must-have upgrade from the previews I've seen so far. Lightroom seems to be more of a requirement, as well, the more I use it. I'm still using Photoshop CS2 and it's really showing its age.

Marti Belcher offering India photo tour, Oct - Nov 2010

Marti Belcher is offering a "Moods Of India" tour, Oct 25 - Nov 9, 2010. The tour gets you two weeks of photo ops in India, and includes room and board, for around $6,000. Airfare, passports, etc. not included. An eight-person limit assures an intimate trip. The site reads:

This journey is for anyone who is passionate about discovering another land, another way of life. The physical stress level of the excursion is moderate. There will be walking but we will not be hiking mountains. It is usually warm in India but October/November is an excellent time to visit India.

Photographers and non-photographers alike will find much to captivate them. Photographers will enjoy the many and varied photo opportunities. However, this is not a photography course. For all participants, this trip is your own personal journey, a chance for you to explore and to tap into your senses. Call to Artists: Venus Envy 2010 at Baton Rouge Gallery

Baton Rouge Gallery will host the 12th Annual Venus Envy-Baton Rouge (VEBR10) exhibition from April 13-29. The exhibition is a multi-media juried showcase featuring the work of female artists living within a 300-mile radius of Baton Rouge. The gallery is accepting applications from eligible female artists interested in taking part in this year’s VEBR10.

Diane Hanson, a gallery artist member, is the juror for VEBR10. Hanson's own work takes fragmented pieces of remembered events and places and creates nonlinear narratives that revolve around one idea or place. Her work is a reflection on rural America and is influenced by the relationship between rural and urban communities, the development of ethanol and genetically modified organisms (GMO), and misconceptions and stereotypes of rural living mixed in with her own experience of being raised on a farm.

Venus Envy is a St. Louis, Mo.-based non-profit organization driven by women that positively affects everyone by empowering women through the arts, according to their mission statement. In addition to VEBR10, Venus Envy also hosts events in St. Louis, Mo.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Davenport, Iowa.

To be considered for the VEBR10 exhibition, all entries must be received (not postmarked) by 6 p.m. on March 18, 2010. For more information on the VEBR10 prospectus and application, please visit batonrougegallery.org or visit the gallery in person at 1442 City Park Avenue. Cédric Delsaux - landscape & interior show

A very nice perspective here on landscapes and interiors, by Cédric Delsaux.

"French photographer Cédric Delsaux, who recently signed with Bonni Benrubi Gallery, opened his show yesterday evening. Delsaux creates landscape and interior photographs that address a popular subject: the interaction of the human (built) environment with the natural environment. "Nous Resterons Sur Terre" (Here to Stay), as the show is titled, borrowing the name of his 2008 monograph, includes images of indoor ski slopes in Dubai, low-income housing dwarfed by a modern casino in Macao, and interiors of a decomposing Soviet-era Tchernobyl hospital, among other wonders."

EVIL camera boasts DSLR sensor in pint-size package

Distant member Jef Jaisun turned in this bit of news about a new type of camera that is out to kick your DSLR's, um, sensor.

EVIL stands for Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens, and is our favorite acronym for cameras like the Olympus Pen, the Lumix GF1 and the Samsung NX10. These small, mirrorless, finderless cameras can fit in a pocket and outperform bulky DSLRs. Here’s why your next camera will probably be EVIL.
