Road Trip: "Bikeriders" exhibit @ SE Museum of Photography in Florida

Need a great excuse to hop on your Harley and head to Florida?

Danny Lyon's groundbreaking series "Bikeriders" is at the Southeast Museum of Photography, Feb. 27 - May7, Daytona Beach, Fl.

About the exhibition:
In 1968, just before Easy Rider roared its way into American consciousness, Danny Lyon finished The Bikeriders. After four years with the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Gang, he had created one of the defining photography projects of the 1960s: The Bikeriders, and pioneered the style that has come to be known as the “New Journalism.” With its mix of grit, realism and romanticism, and its ground-breaking use of the bikers own stories and accounts, The Bikeriders was a landmark collection that documented the abandon and risk of motorcycle gangs, and powerfully propelled motorcycle counterculture into the mainstream American consciousness. The images and interviews in The Bikeriders are as raw, alive, and dramatic today as they were nearly four decades ago.

Rebirth Workshops - three grants available

Update on Rebirth Workshops - they have available at least three grants for the workshop: 1 - $2,000, 1- $1000, and 1 - $500.

What are the grants? Who is eligible?
The Creativity Grants are cash awards provided to help the recipients pursue any creative endeavor they wish. All photographers who attend the Rebirth Workshop & Retreat are eligible to apply. We will be distributing three grants: (1) $2000 award, (1) $1000 award, and (1) $500 award. Each grant will go to a different applicant, enabling a total of three people to receive funding.

 How do I apply?
After attending Rebirth all you have to do is answer three questions and submit them to us by April 30 -- four weeks after the workshop. The questions are meant to help you analyze your own creative journey.
1. What were your expectations of creativity, art, and your own life before attending Rebirth?
2. What are they after having attended Rebirth? Have they changed? Have they been reinforced?
3. In what ways will you commit to leading a more creative life? How will you encourage others to do the same?

Jock Sturges portrait workshop

And speaking of Jock Sturges ... New Orleans Workshops is offering a 5-day workshop with the man himself, just around the corner, March 7-11. There are a few spots left, at $1,300 each.

(I would absolutely love to do this, but the fee is a little preventative. If anyone else does it, please contact me afterward, I'd like to set up a quick phone interview just to mention on the blog about how it went.)

From the Workshops site:
This five-day workshop examines advanced techniques in fine art portraiture. Outstanding portraits are the result of the interaction with the model prior as much as during to the shoot, and Sturges focuses on establishing a relationship between the photographer and his/her subject. Participants will explore techniques of empowering their subject to reveal an inner truth essential to making a fine art portrait with non-professional models, a technique of which he is a universally recognized master.

The workshop consists of morning and afternoon sessions. Each morning begins with a review of the prior day's work. In the afternoon, under the tutorial of Sturges, participants shoot with models on location at The House on Bayou Road. Built in 1798, this Petite Creole Plantation reigns in simple elegance over historic New Orleans' "back of town", across the street from Edgar Degas's former residence and just a few blocks from the New Orleans Museum of Arts. Two acres of lush landscaping, authentic architecture, and creature comfort make this the perfect setting to experience the romantic grit of old New Orleans against the backdrop of Louisiana in the full flower of spring.

Jock Sturges at Gallery for Fine Photography

Jock Sturges "New Work" is on display at A Gallery for Fine Photography through May 28, 2010, with an artist's reception, Friday, March 5, 2010 from 5-8 p.m. Sturges is primarily known for his brilliant work with adolescents. Call 504-568-1313 for info.

Goldring exhibit review on Inside Art

Erika Goldring's exhibit at Loyola gets a shout from Inside Art this week:

Musicians and performers can be harder to photograph than you think. In Nola, we are blessed with musical performances and parades that pop up all around us all the time, yet it’s not easy to provide a fresh look at frequently photographed people and events. Erika Goldring’s performance portraits at Loyola often stand out for their subtly psychological sense of reverie that conveys something of a performer’s inner life. Because of her work ... [more]

"Four By Five" winners announced

Thom Bennett, VP of Programming, has announced the winners of the New Orleans Photo Alliance's "Four by Five" exhibition. They are:

Michael E. Gordon from California
Euphus Ruth from Mississippi
Laura J. Bennett from Texas
Susanna Gaunt from Michigan
Charles Mintz from Ohio.

In an email sent to all contest applicants, Bennett thanked everyone and mentioned how challenging it was for juror Steve Simmons to make the selections.

"One of the reasons we wanted to have this exhibit was to showcase the creative and varied contemporary work being done with large format view cameras and we were overwhelmed, not only with the number of photographers submitting but, more importantly, with the high quality of work being done," Bennett said.

The five photographers selected will be part of an exhibition in the New Orleans Photo Alliance gallery in April and May, and will be published in View Camera Magazine.

The exhibit opens Saturday, April 3 and will hang until May 23.

Michelle Wuttke - Mixed Media Photo Exhibit at Ochsner through February 28

I created these particular mixed media works out of a desire to add an additional tier of revelation of my photographs, beyond that which a simple mat and frame might convey. The precise selection of the media further connects me to my images, as I pull a particular color or maybe a thematic style from each photograph and then expand upon it through the art of mosaic.

Works are on display along the Art Walk at Ochsner Medical Center Main Campus, 1514 Jefferson Highway, through the month of February.

Pilfered Magazine shut down by Copyr. Alliance

The Copyright Alliance has succeeded in closing down, at least temporarily, Pilfered Magazine, an online publication that uses photographs without permission from the photographers.

"Thanks to your actions in mobilizing the visual arts community, friends, and other creators, I am happy to announce that over the weekend the site took down all infringing images. And, it claims that it will only solicit works from rights owners," said spokeperson Lucinda M. Dugger.

"Through your comments on the Magazine's website, the Copyright Alliance's blog, Twitter, personal blogs, and other sites, we see how quickly artists can influence change when speaking with a collective voice as a community."

FEMA "X-Code" Exhibition Project: call to artists

Seeking photography of the spray-painted FEMA X-Codes in post-Katrina New Orleans for The X-Code Exhibition Project.

Deadline for submission: March 15, 2010

Davis-Moye & Associates announces a call for artists to participate in a photography exhibition documenting the X-codes that marked residences and other buildings as having been searched in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina (August 2005). There are several potential exhibition opportunities of the photographs and they are outlined on the site. The codes are a valuable record, expressed in an unforgettable graphic, and displayed on the distinctive architecture of New Orleans, with their usage standardized and fine-tuned as the searches progressed. They are even more moving and powerful when considering their message and when comprehending the stunning volume of their repetition.

The first display venue for the collected images will be in an online gallery on Southern Spaces.

"The Eyes of Me" on PBS

THE EYES OF ME - trailer from keith maitland on Vimeo.

Between now and then, EYES will be screened in almost 50 communities as a part of ITVS’s Community Cinema initiative – there’s a link below to see if there’s a screening near you.

Poche photos through FQ Saints craze

Received an email from member Irwin Poché who was, judging by her tweet and her photos, in the middle of the masses of screaming Who Dats after the Saints miracle. As she said, "Utter delirium in New Orleans right now. I've been all over the world and I've never seen a celebration as epic as this. This is beyond words. The earth is vibrating."

And to think I actually missed all this up here in Monroe. Well, maybe next year ...

Local poet seeks photos for new collection

Local writer/playwright/poet Bud Faust is seeking a photographer who is interested in collaborating with him on his latest collection of poems. He says: "Most of the poems are very visual in imagery, as I tend to see poems as snapshots of life. The work is also very reflective of life in and around New Orleans, with its sensuality, beauty and coarseness all on display."

Email him if interested, and he can provide a manuscript to see if "anything sparks the creative mind," as he puts it.

The Vice Guide to Liberia

With all the news about Haiti, it might lead some daring photogs to ponder being a U.S. photographer working on a documentary there, or in some even more devastated section of the world like, say, Liberia ... but after seeing this one-hour video from VBS.TV, you will wonder no more, and you will just be happy nobody is trying to eat your heart (seriously) and steal your camera. Frankly, Haiti might be the most dangerous assignment I would care to take on -- and it's not all that dangerous in comparison.

Loyola: Erika Goldring @ Diboll Gallery, plus Harold Baquet on Feb. 24

New Orleans photographer Harold Baquet will offer a personal look at New Orleans culture and society illustrated by his photographs on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., in Loyola University's Miller Hall, Room 114. "Harold Baquet: A Retrospective," is free and open to the public.

Goldring works as a staff photographer at Tipitina’s and UNO Lakefront Arena. She also has freelanced for PBS’ “Live from the Artists’ Den.” Most recently, Goldring’s works were accepted into the Smithsonian-affiliated Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Miss.

Momenta Workshop in NO, April 7-11

Momenta Workshops is coming to NO again, and looking for participants and volunteers to help "Project New Orleans With Chris Usher," April 7-11, 2010.

Momenta Workshops staff and instructors work with each student to find a photo story that is close to their personal vision and embodies the theme of hope and recovery. Momenta will offer to connect photographers with nonprofit organizations we have worked with in the past. However, each photographer is encouraged to find their own photo story or charity of their choice, under the guidance of our team of instructors.

We will be working on the ground in the hardest hit areas of the region to create a narrative about the hurricane's devastating impact. Student are encouraged to record audio for presentations. Multimedia instruction will be available for interested attendees. On the final night of the workshop, Momenta will host a slide show presentation for all the organizations who participated in the workshop as well as local residents and the workshop attendees.

NOPA members get a 20% discount on the workshop, and the coordinators are putting out a call for donations during the final slideshow reception to help raise a little money for the cause.

They need one volunteer especially to pass out promotional materials and fliers around town, and they're offering a small stipend for the help.

Workshop fee: $1,329

NOMA and IMA - Super Bowl trash talk

A press release about a Super Bowl wager between the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) and the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is all over the net. I actually called and spoke with the Director of Communications & Marketing @ NOMA, Grace Wilson, to verify that this was for real, and not a hoax that some art-inclined football fan had started. Wilson said yes, it is for real, and not only that but NOMA even offered a portrait of the Mannings (father and son). It was declined in favor of classic and more valuable work.

Below are the paintings, and the press release followed by a ton of links to newspapers and other versions of the story (click the "read more" button at the bottom). I'm partial to the Renior, myself. Whoux Dat!
NEW ORLEANS, LA.- In an online betting match that began via Twitter, museum directors Maxwell L. Anderson, The Melvin & Bren Simon Director and CEO of the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), and E. John Bullard, The Montine McDaniel Freeman Director and CEO of the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), have agreed to a three-month loan of a significant work of art to the museum in the city whose NFL team wins the Super Bowl on February 7, 2010.

If the Indianapolis Colts win, NOMA will loan the landscape painting "Ideal View of Tivoli", 1644, by French artist Claude Lorrain to the IMA. If the New Orleans Saints win, the IMA will loan "The Fifth Plague of Egypt", 1800, a landscape by British artist J.M.W. Turner to NOMA.

The betting war, which began on Monday, January 25, when arts blogger Tyler Green of Modern Art Notes (artsjournal.com/man) tweeted: "@tylergreendc: Would love to see @IMAmuseum and @NOMA1910 make a Super Bowl bet. Like a painting-loan-to-the-winning city," quickly escalated to an all-out betting war of fine art.

Anderson started the betting on Twitter by offering a contemporary artwork by Ingrid Calame to NOMA, should the Saints win: "@MaxAndersonUSA: We are prepared to lend a painting by Ingrid Calame to NOMA, for 3 months as of July 1: http://bit.ly/5de79q," also noting, "We're already spackling the wall where the NOMA loan will hang."

Southern Open juried exhibition - call for entries

The Southern Open is a competitive juried exhibition featuring artists from the 5 southern states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Taking place in the Main Gallery at the AcA, Southern Open 2010 includes all types of original media: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and video/DVD provided by visual artists over the age of 18.

Each year the AcA curator chooses a single juror who then selects which artwork will be included in the Southern Open. This year's juror is Bill Arning, Director of the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston since April 2009.
