Keep the eyes of the world on Haiti, yet there are many stories that are not being seen, and will continue to be under-reported in the months to come. 100Eyes we will be conducting an ongoing series of workshops for photographers who will fly in to Haiti, and work on stories all over the country. Workshops for February are sold out, but we are signing up people for March at this time. We are happy to help anyone wanting to travel to document Haiti, you don’t have to be part of our group to share in this information. Pricing for the workshop is set a $1,500 at this time. We expect to have groups of 6-8 working on the ground, the sessions will last for one week, and our dates are flexible and dependent on enrollment. Costs are exclusive of airfare and food, and participants will be responsible for bringing in essential supplies which we will detail for you, including enough food for your stay. There will also be limited housing possibilities and participants should understand that they will be working in a crisis area, and that a certain amount of risk is involved.
We are taking donations for food and medicine through our partner Zanmi Lakay who will have full fiduciary control of donations, and have been conducting photo classes in for Haitian children since 2000. Zanmi Lakay will be involved in all aspects of the project.

PPLA Spring Seminar - La. portrait masters
This is an education packed Spring Seminar at the “Pearl of Louisiana” – The Paragon Resort & Casino in Marksville, La. PPLA will be featuring world renowned portrait artists Joseph & Louise Simone. As you are allowed into the world of passion and enthusiasm that Joseph & Louise share with their clients, you will learn how to take classical portraiture to unmatched levels. Their seminar will feature lighting, posing, composition and all the elements needed to enhance your work as a photographer. They will have hands on photography sessions featuring a maternity client, a family, children and a senior. The Simones are mentors for the Eastman Kodak Company and have won numerous awards. They will present the first portion of their program beginning at 1pm on Sunday, March 21st and will continue all day on the 22nd.

Put your digital camera to work in wildlife photography with CC Lockwood. Much has changed in nature photography in the last 30 years. CC will teach you to improve your photographs with these spring workshops into swamp, marsh or forest.March 18, 2010 - CC Lockwood will lecture on nature and wildlife photography with special emphasis on digital photography in preparation for the workshops for the two following weekends. It will also contain digital work flow instruction. This lecture is included in each of the separate field trips.
March 20, 2010- Atchafalaya Basin digital photography workshop; a day in the Atchafalaya Basin by canoe or bateau specializing in photography of wildlife and wetland landscapes. The lecture on 3/18/2010 and critique to follow workshop are included.

This three-week residency will emphasize the exploration of Shanghai and encourage the integration of Western and Eastern photographic practices. Participants will receive insightful seminars on historical and contemporary Chinese photography, with the goal of seeing their world and their work from a more global perspective. There will also be an intimate investigation of Shanghai's contemporary art world. Individual portfolio reviews by prominent members of Shanghai's photography community will provide the opportunity to network and share ideas with curators and gallery owners, as well as colleagues. This year, the city will also play host to the Shanghai World Expo, a four-month festival of art and culture that will fill the city with a multitude of additional exhibitions and events. There will also be excursions to ancient towns in the suburbs of Shanghai, opportunity for individual weekend travel, and optional lessons in Mandarin.
Two years of photography education and a working knowledge of Photoshop is required for this course. Tuition of $4,300 includes classes, housing, facility use, field trips and guided tours. Please note, tuition does not include airfare to Shanghai and a visa is required for entrance into China.

During America’s current climate, it will be interesting to reevaluate an element of our country’s essence that so strongly defines it: The American Dream.

Wm. Greiner auctioning full-day photo shoot for Haiti relief
I will spend one full day in New Orleans escorting the winning bidder on a photo shoot throughout the city. The outing will include lunch in the French Quarter at the famous Napoleon House. We will visit locations (Bywater, Marigny, French Quarter, Irish Channel, Lower Ninth Ward, Lakeview) where I have made many of my images which have appeared in books and museum exhibitions. The outing will occur within one year of the winning bid, on a day mutually agreed upon by both parties.The first bid started @ $750. All proceeds [bid here] will be donated to Clinton Bush Haiti Fund relief of Haitian Earthquake victims.

Fundraising Party for Haiti @ McKenna Museum
This is a fundraiser to benefit Ecole Nationale des Arts (ENARTS) and Ballet Folklorique Tamboula d’Haiti, of Port au Prince, Haiti.In the wake of the earthquake in Haiti, Monique Moss and supporting New Orleans artists have organized this grassroots effort that will directly aid the master teachers and students of the school in rebuilding their lives and the vital function of ENARTS as a center for Arts and Cultural Education and spiritual well-being. Moss has been studying with Peniel and is scheduled to return to Port-au-Prince with Peniel in the up-coming weeks.
We will collect donations at the door starting at $10.00 for the Benefit, $5.00 for the Secondline class, and $10.00 for the Haitian Dance class. We will also accept all other additional donations of food, medicine, clothes, cleaning supplies, etc.

MUSE @ Tulane's Carroll Gallery
The Newcomb Art Department’s Carroll Gallery presents MUSE, an exhibition of photographic portraits of women by four American female photographers: Tanyth Berkeley, Katy Grannan, Eve Fowler and Dana Hoey.The exhibition is open and runs through Feb. 12.
All four artists will visit Tulane University to participate in a symposium on the aesthetics and politics of gender representation on Thursday, Jan. 21st from 6:30-8:00 pm in Freeman Auditorium, Woldenberg Art Center. A reception for the artists will immediately follow in Carroll Gallery from 8:00-10:00pm.
Significant to all four artists’ exhibited projects is the collaborative relationship between the artist and her subject. The photographs by these artists consistently employ alternative approaches to the representation of women resulting in images that force the viewer to question how the female form has been objectified by artists and popular culture throughout history.

"Blind Prom" closing reception
NOTICE: this closing has been canceled.Austin-based photographer, Sarah Wilson, winner of the 2008 PhotoNOLA Review Prize, has her Blind Prom photography project on display at the New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery through January 24th.
This series features images Wilson took during several of the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired's prom nights, including shots of them getting ready, candids of the event, and formal portraits of the students.
The reception will follow a screening of the documentary 'The Eyes of Me' at Zeitgeist at 5pm. Wilson was the stills photographer for this production, and it is where she was first introduced to The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
THE EYES OF ME by visiting filmmaker Keith Maitland. An up-close look at four teens who have lost their sight. Set in Austin, TX, this film follows their high school experiences of dating, academic responsibilities, fitting in, family problems and preparing for college over the course of one dynamic year at the Texas School For the Blind and Visually Impaired. Co-presented by the New Orleans Photo Alliance.

Iberia Parish Library will host the exhibition, Photography: A Learning Process, featuring the work of David Armentor from Jan. 14 to Feb. 17 at the Main Library in New Iberia. "Grace Before Dying" LPB video; Lori Waselchuck speaks in NY
Lori Waselchuck's traveling exhibit, Grace Before Dying, has been supplemented on LPB with video of the hospice workers. The site reads:Over a two year period, professional photographer Lori Waselchuk visited Angola State Prison to document volunteers who have discovered a compassionate mission. These inmates provide hospice care to their fellow prisoners who are dying behind bars. Producer Donna LaFleur spoke with some of the volunteers as they hope to provide grace before dying.

The Grand Isle Community Development Team, Inc. (GICDT) with support from the Grand Isle Port Commission and the Town of Grand Isle, invites artists to enter their works with themes relating to the physical, political and emotional landscape asssociated with the only inhabited Louisiana barrier island and its surrounding wetlands. The goal of the Exhibition is to showcase excellent visual art from the region and raise awareness of Louisiana's fragile but rich coastal environment and continuing loss.
The Exhibition will be held at the Grand Isle Community Center on Highway One, April 10-18, 2010 and is sponsored by Grand Isle Community Development Team, Inc., a non profit organization, along with the Grand Isle Port Commission and the Town of Grand Isle . The 13th Annual Grand Isle Migratory Bird Celebration also is held during that same week.

Worldwide audience for NOPA blog
From the NOPA "tooting our own horn" dept.:Recently, someone working on the upcoming Green Lantern film to be shot soon in New Orleans sent us an email looking for a digital photo artist. We published the opportunity to the blog. The next day, the sender asked us to take it down because she needed someone local and was already getting calls from -- get this -- Australia.
We took the post down, of course, but now have evidence that our local blog actually is read far and wide.
So, just to follow up, we added a "flag counter" widget (in the sidebar at right) that will show everyone at a glance how many hits this site is getting from outside our borders. I guess we could have looked at the site stats for that, but the widget is more fun.
Its only been there for less than a day, and already shows hits from ten different countries. If you click on the widget, it takes you to a chart that breaks it all down. Pretty neat.

Polymer Photogravure Workshop
The New Orleans Photography Workshops is offering a three-day polymer photogravure workshop with Josephine Sacabo, May 14-16.
Polymer photogravures are a new way of making gravures by exposing in UV light and processing in water - no harsh chemicals are used and the result is as beautiful as a copper gravure.
The workshop includes a shooting component with models, after which participants will learn to create digital negatives and to make gravures on a state-of-the-art press. No prior experience is necessary.

In this half-week classroom-based seminar (Wednesday evening - Saturday noon) Mary Virginia Swanson provides insights into the most effective avenues for photographers to introduce their work to gallery and museum professionals and others seeking to acquire or display original artwork.
Through a series of lectures and presentations Swanson will discuss the value of entering national and international juried exhibitions and participating in portfolio review events. Important gallery trade shows are discussed from the perspective of helping artists assess prices and edition sizes, and research the marketplace towards potential venues for their work. Effective self-promotion materials are shared with participants, as are the professional practices necessary to successfully present their work. She will also discuss 'talking points' when given the opportunity to sign with a gallery for representation.
In addition to discussing the collecting marketplace, in response to a growing use of fine art photographs as illustration on music packaging, book jackets and diverse print media, Swanson provides experienced insights issues relating to granting the rights to reproduce (license) photographs from personal bodies of work, and related negotiations. One session within this information-filled workshop is dedicated to group sharing; participants are invited to bring several samples of their work to share with the class (not required).
Swanson's book “The Business of Photography: Principles and Practices" will be provided to all participants as the course workbook.
Frank Relle's "Nightscapes" at Sibley Gallery and more
Frank Relle invites all for the closing reception of his Nightscapes photography show at the new Sibley Gallery in New Orleans, Friday January 15th, 6-9 pm. [map]
The show features his newly released photographs from the streets of Natchez, the highways of Louisiana and the sugarcane fields of White Castle. Works from the series have been represented in major public and private collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Smithsonian Museum of American History, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Women's Work
Slideluck Potshow is proud to announce Women's Work, a collaboration with Ladies Lotto that will be taking place in Los Angeles on March 27th, during Women's Awareness Month. At this multimedia slideshow and potluck dinner, artists from around the world will present work that illuminates aspects of the contemporary female experience.This will be our first issue-based event and will explore the current state of women's lives - from the inspiring success stories to the profound adversities. In doing so, our aim is to celebrate the positive developments and to create dialog and awareness about the issues women face globally.
If you are interested in submitting a project to Women's Work, or know an artist who should, guidelines can be found here and the submission deadline is Monday, February 15th. We will be on the lookout for creative, unexpected and incisive treatments of numerous subjects. If you are interested in sponsoring or getting involved with this event, please let us know! There are a number of exciting facets to this project that we will be integrating in the coming weeks.

FOUR by FIVE - call for entries

Since the inception of photography, 170 years ago, techniques have changed and processes have evolved but the one constant has been the view camera. From the age of the Daguerrotype to the present age of digital imaging the view camera has been the instrument of choice for discerning image makers.
The New Orleans Photo Alliance is seeking contemporary imagery from photographers using large format view cameras. Steve Simmons, publisher of VIEW CAMERA MAGAZINE and author of USING THE VIEW CAMERA will choose four images each from five different photographers. The five photographers chosen will also be published in a future edition of View Camera Magazine.
The deadline for submissions will be midnight Monday, February 1, 2010 and notification of accepted artists will be Monday, February 8, 2010. Deadline for delivery of accepted work (matted, framed and gallery ready) will be Friday, March 26, 2010. The opening reception will be Saturday, April 3, 2010.
