Sandra Clark review

Eric Bookhardt gave a nice review to Sandra Clark's exhibit "Juju" currently in the Diboll:

"A New Orleans native and longtime Bay St. Louis resident, Clark endured the ultimate photographic nightmare when Katrina’s tidal surge claimed the negatives that were a large part of her life’s work. Her new digital photographs on view at Loyola are very different from anything she has done in the past. A colorful series of portraits of little dolls and figurines rescued from the storm rubble, there is little that suggests hurricanes—at first ..." [more]

"La Habana: In Spite of…" exhibit at Octavia Art Gallery

EXHIBITION: La Habana: In Spite of… By Victoria Montoro Zamorano
DATES: October 3 – November 4, 2009
RECEPTION: Saturday, October 3, 6 – 9 pm

Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of 22 photos by Victoria Montoro Zamorano – the first ever in the city for the artist – October 3 through November 4, 2009. A reception with the artist will be held at Octavia Art Gallery during Art For Arts’ Sake on Saturday, October 3.

Zamorano left Havana in 1961, when she was 12 years old. In May 2008, she returned for the first time. Zamorano captured images – and memories – that became the stunning exhibit showcased at Octavia Art Gallery. This body of work displays how the buildings on the Malecon in Havana have survived in spite of time and circumstances, political and economical. Victoria’s cousin, Cuban painter Humberto Calzada, has tried to reconstruct his visual past by painting a partial restoration over one of Victoria’s photographs on canvas, leaving behind part of the ruin as a witness to the tragedy that has occurred.

ASMP and Copyright Alliance petition

Fellow members of NOPA,

If you’re not already aware, there has been an effort underway for several years to weaken our rights as creators. It is no less than an attack on our personal freedom. Those involved in that effort don’t want you to stand up for your rights. Maintaining ownership of your work is very important and having the freedom to choose how you use, copy, and distribute your work is necessary for your success and livelihood.

The American Society of Media Photographers, of which I am a member, along with other organizations in the Copyright Alliance, is urging photographers to sign an online letter to tell the President and Vice President that you want your creative work to be recognized and respected.

It’s easy to sign the letter. At the link below, just enter your name, artist type, city, state, and email, fill out the code below it, and then hit “sign.”

I urge you to sign the letter and pass this information on to your other creative friends to sign. It’s not just for photographers. Your voice as an artist is important. Please sign the letter now.

Thanks,
George Long

NOLA Darkroom Search

Hey Folks! My name is Morgan (I'm the volunteer coordinator at N.O.P.A.) and I'm a local photographer. I moved to New Orleans this earlier this year and since then I've had a lot of difficulty finding a darkroom to process film and make prints. The Darkroom and The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts both broke down their analogue darkrooms this past Spring. Louisiana Artworks hasn't expressed any particular interest in opening a space to accommodate photographers. So I turn to the NOPA blog for advice... does anyone know where I can find a darkroom? If I had the funds or the space to open my own darkroom I would do so in a heartbeat. I managed a darkroom for four years in Vermont so I'm knowledgeable with chemicals, the in's and out's of printing, pumps, ventilation, etc. I'm willing to pay rental fees, provide all of my own supplies, give blood (kidding), or whatever it takes to start printing. Is there anyone out there who can help me? Please contact me if you have any advice or suggestions. Thanks in advance for your time.

happy shooting,

K. Morgan Sasser

Non Profit Reach Out

Hey everyone, My name is Kenneth. I am new to the area and pretty new to Photography. At my last home (College Station), I would donate a few hours of my time taking pictures, maybe a couple editing, and some space on my hard drive to some of the non-profits. In return the various non-profits have been kind to me. The experience was very rewarding so I want to give people the opportunity to expose their art to this facet of photography. There are alot of passionate people that work for these non-profits and some great opportunities to expand your understanding of photography. What I am proposing is that I gather a list of volunteers and a list of non-profits over the coming weeks. From the volunteers, I would want contact information and possible times that you will be available. From the non-profits, I would want times that they would want photographers, places whether it be an event or their facilities. If any of you are doing this already, or have a non-profit that you would like to donate services to then please contact me via email. There are alot of non-profits in town that need this service to improve the outreach of their program. Thanks in advance for your time.
