Jam Session: America's Jazz Ambassadors Embrace the World
Upcoming exhibition at The Mint, July 25- Sept 25

In Cold War battles over ideology and culture with the Soviet Union, America’s most effective asset may well have been her great jazz musicians. Touring the world for the State Department from the mid 1950s to the early 1970s, they stirred millions of hearts and minds with jazz performances showcasing America’s unique national character and artistic achievements.
Now the Louisiana State Museum presents their story in photography in Jam Session: America’s Jazz Ambassadors Embrace the World, opening July 25 at the Old U.S. Mint.
With over 90 photographs, posters and other materials, the exhibit traces the journeys of jazz icons like Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, and Sarah Vaughan to more than 35 countries on four continents.
Organized by the Meridian International Center in Washington DC, Jam Session brings many remarkable images to the public for the first time. There’s Louis Armstrong in a sea of children’s faces in Cairo in 1961. There’s the incomparably cool Dizzy Gillespie riding a motor scooter through the streets of Zagreb, Yugoslavia, in 1956. And there’s Benny Goodman playing a Burmese oboe in Rangoon in 1957.
The exhibit will run through September 25 at the Mint, located at the foot of Esplanade Avenue in the French Quarter, from 10 AM to 4:30 PM daily except Monday. Admission is free.

Calling All Food Photographers! Exhibition Opportunities at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum
Hey NOPA people,
This is Chris Smith, manager of the collection for the new Southern Food and Beverage Museum in Riverwalk Marketplace. I do exhibitions too.
We have a gallery that is very nice for photography. We’ve had several photo exhibits on display in our short one-year history. In fact, right now we have an exhibition titled The Birth of Coffee by Daniel Lorenzetti. It consists of 37 photographs though they are tightly exhibited. The show is sponsored by Folger’s.
We need more photography exhibits and as you might expect, they need to focus on food and beverage of the American South. The show can focus on photo-journalism, or food styling, or other. We are very flexible. Duration of shows generally is six weeks. We do the standard publicity and the opening party and other stuff.
A person came in the other day to ask if we would sell her photos in our gift shop. We could tell by the photos that she had some talent and turns out she has some experience too. After some negotiation, she left with an exhibition and an additional project.
We’d like to work with you. (I did a project with Don Marshall when NOPA was on St. Mary street so I know about NOPA.) We love photography and recognize that we can display the works of photographers.

Bruce Keyes "Spirit of New Orleans" at McKenna Museum
MCKENNA MUSEUM & ARTVOICES PRESENTS ‘SPIRIT OF NEW ORLEANS’ BY BRUCE KEYES
June 27 through July 11, 2009
McKenna Museum is pleased to announce a new exhibition of images from the recently released book "Spirit of New Orleans" by Bruce Keyes at 2003 Carondelet Street, New Orleans from June 27 through July 11, 2009.
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 27th 6 to 8pm
Bruce Keyes, a native New Orleanian was born in 1950. Travels related to his Viet Nam era United States Navy service were the inspiration for his interest in photography. After years of assignment photography, he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology's School of Photographic Arts and Sciences for two years of intensive independent study. His first solo show entitled "Odyessy" was at the Noho Gallery in New York City and has been followed by numerous shows home and abroad.
In his own words: “My focus is on the people of New Orleans, performers, spectators, their gestures, postures, joyful expressions and the like. Their body language and playful spirit is what I capture. The subtractive quality of the b&w images and how it portrays the stature and importance of the subject is what attracts me.”
‘Spirit of New Orleans’ a 30 year retrospective has been included in the (research) library archives of the New Orleans Museum of Art .
For more information on Bruce Keyes please contact Shantrelle Lewis at shantrelleplewis@gmail.com or call 504 586 7432. The Museum will be open Thursday through Saturday 11am to 4pm.

A Little Help from my Friends?
Hello,
I hate to beg, but I had a major computer crash about a week ago. I'm back online with a refurbished iBook G4 (OSX 10.5.7). So far no data has been recovered from the old computer.
I really need Word, Excel and Photoshop to function as PhotoNOLA coordinator. Even Photoshop Elements would be fine. Is there anyone out there who can hook me up? Quickly? Please!!!
Thanks in advance,
Jen Shaw

PhotoNOLA Committee Meeting
Hey,
I'd like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in helping with PhotoNOLA, our annual December photo festival, to attend the committee meeting tomorrow evening.
Wednesday, June 10
6:30pm
Photo Alliance Gallery
1111 St. Mary St.
Nola, 70130
Planning is well under way for Dec 2009. We're looking for some more organizational level help with various aspects of the PhotoGALA (a benefit party and fun(d)raiser for the Photo Alliance), to be held Thur Dec 10 at NOMA. Food & Beverage Coordinator, Event Coordinator, someone to help with the art auction... There's also plenty of space for organized and committed folks to jump in and help with all the other great events we have planned; portfolio reviews, workshops, lectures, etc. This is all volunteer based - so no cash - but your efforts will result in lots of fun, friendship and good karma.
Events this year will run from Dec 3 - 13, with the portfolio reviews falling on the second weekend - Dec 12 & 13. Our website will be updated with 2009 information in about a month. In the meantime, if you have any questions feel free to email me at info@photonola.org.
Thanks!

FLOATULENTS: Inflatable Photographs by Martin von Haselberg Opens at NOMA Tomorrow

FLOATULENTS: Inflatable Photographs by Martin von Haselberg, June 10 to September 6
Martin von Haselberg (a.k.a. Harry Kipper) was a member of the infamous London and Los Angeles-based 1970s performance art duo, The Kipper Kids. Also in the early '70s he began evolving his deeply psychological public performance work into personal photographic self-portraiture, a practice which he continues today. His artistic lineage leads the viewer from the slapstick clowning of Spike Jones to the heightened abreaction of the 1960s Vienna Aktionists. In this, von Haselberg's first American museum show, his latest photographic experiments are presented as inflatable works, which instead of rising into the air, rest upon the floor as sculptures. "FLOATULENTS" are air balloons in the sense of Warhol's 1964 "Silver Flotations," but they are more than mere design. Von Haselberg describes these new works as "time-based," as springing from the facial contortions and grimaces of his performances. FLOATULENTS is the third in the _museological exhibition series, organized by Diego Cortez, Freeman Family Curator of Photography.
