Kindred Cool by Laylah Amatullah Barrayn Opening at McKenna Museum Tonight

Opening Reception for Kindred Cool is this Saturday!

Please Join us for the opening reception of

KINDRED COOL: Portraits of Jazz Friendships

Photography by Laylah Amatullah Barrayn

Saturday, May 30th
6 - 9 p.m.

Kindred Cool is a photography project that uses the relationship between Ralph Ellison, Romare Bearden and Albert Murray as an inspiration for documenting other friendships forged and fostered through a shared appreciation for jazz. Through photographic portraits, Kindred Cool serves as a visual documentary project showcasing the diversity of the jazz diaspora, that is, individuals who are inspired by American classical music: jazz.

The subjects of Kindred Cool are a motley crew of jazz educators, vocalists and instrumentalists, rappers, aficionados, journalists, publicists, dancers and painters. A partial list of those photographed for Kindred Cool are Ellis Marsalis, Ladybug Mecca, Randy Weston, Mos Def, DJ Spooky, Vijay Iyer, Rhonda Ross, Brian Jackson, Farah Jasmine Griffin among many others of the 'jazz society.'

Slide Scanning Special at Moldaner's

VOLUME SLIDE SCANNING OFFER from Moldaner's Camera and Imaging

During the summer months things tend to slow down Uptown, so we have available capacity on our high-volume Kodak Slide Scanner. Here's what we are willing to offer:

Our standard scanning prices are on our website (www.moldaners.com) . We normally offer 9Mb and 25Mb scans, with larger sizes being custom scans. From now until July 31st, or until our available capacity is filled, we are willing to make a SPECIAL OFFER on 35mm slide scan batches of 1000 or more.

YOUR CHOICE:
A. Custom size scans (25-60MB) at the 25MB price

B. 25MB scans at the 9MB price (85 cents in quantity)

C. 9MB scans at 49 cents each.

These images can be JPEG or TIFF. If you want TIFFs, due to the size, we would either return them to you on a portable drive that you provide in advance, or we can purchase one and bill you for it.

NOTE: These will all be unprocessed scans, with a black edge from the mount so you lose none of the image. They will NOT be rotated, trimmed or adjusted for density or color. This is an opportunity to get your images archived quickly and inexpensively. Most of you would probably prefer to work on your images yourself anyway, using whatever you are comfortable with (Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.). Its also a good way to backup your images for hurricane season.

This is a first come, first served offer! When we have reached our capacity, the offer will be canceled.
NOTE: We are willing to have anyone come by with some slides and have us scan a few samples to evaluate.

Call for Joan of Ark Inspired Art - Deadline Thursday

CALL TO ARTISTS:
We still need a few artists for the 2nd Annual Joan of Arc Feast Day March & Celebration this weekend.

Organized completely by two local artists, the goal of this event is to foster awareness and appreciation for our city's adopted heroine, St. Joan of Arc. As New Orleanians working through an era of rebuilding and renewal we believe that Joan stands as an incredibly inspiring symbol of perseverance against all odds and assumptions.

On Saturday, May 30, Joan's Feast Day, we invite every New Orleanian to join us in front of the Cathedral to begin the march. The highlight of the march is a visit to her golden statue in the Place d'France where we will adorn her with flowers and toast her with wine. The march will then lead us to a celebration complete with live music & a collaborative art show.

We need: Any Joan of Arc inspired art. This is completely open to interpretation. The only logistic requirement is that it can hang on a wall. Deadline for submissions Thursday May 28.

Please contact Lara for more information: desmola@yahoo.com
Thanks!

CALL FOR ENTRIES: FANTASTIC PLASTIC

Watson Studio Gallery and the Texas Photographic Society
are pleased to announce:
Call For Entries: Fantastic Plastic
Submission Deadline June 27, 2009

About the Theme: Fantastic Plastic
"To hold, point and shoot a (plastic) Diana camera implies a conscious decision to relinquish control. To concentrate your creative powers on capturing the moment and telling a story -- rather than fiddling with a bunch of knobs and levers." This quote from the Society of Lomography sums up the goal of this exhibition. Fantastic Plastic will feature the work of selected avant-garde artists who challenge themselves to create compelling images with plastic cameras and other "lo-fi" cameras such as Holga, Lomo, pin-hole, Lensbabies lenses, cell-phone cameras, home-made cameras, TtV with vintage cameras, etc. Watson Studio Gallery in partnership with the Texas Photographic Society invites and encourages all photographers and digital illustrators working in all media, to participate in this exhibition.

Eligibility:
The exhibition is open to all domestic and international photographers working with digital or traditional photography, digital/photo illustration or combinations of these media as long as a plastic or lo-fi camera/lens was involved in the process.

Exhibition and Awards:
As a benefit of being selected for this exhibition, artists and their work will be seen by an audience of artists and collectors who appreciate photographic and digital art forms.
- Winning images will be exhibited and available for sale at Watson Studio
Gallery in Johnson City, Texas from July 25 to September 19, 2009.
- Winners will also be prominently featured on the Watson Studio Gallery

Sally Mann film @ NOMA May 27

Wednesday, May 27, 6 p.m. - Film: What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann (Stern Auditorium)
"As one of the world's preeminent photographers, Sally Mann creates artwork that challenges viewers' values and moral attitudes. Described by Time magazine as 'America's greatest photographer,' she first came to international prominence in 1992 with Immediate Family, a series of complex and enigmatic pictures of her own children. This work, and the controversy that followed it, was chronicled in Steven Cantor's Academy Award-winning short film, Blood Ties. What Remains returns to follow the creation of Mann's seminal new work: a photo series revolving around various aspects of death and decay. Never one to compromise, Sally Mann reflects on her own personal feelings toward death as she continues to examine the boundaries of contemporary photography. Shown at home on her family farm in Virginia, she is surrounded by her husband and now-grown children, and her willingness to reveal her artistic process as it unfolds allows the viewer to gain exclusive entrance to her world. Spanning five years, What Remains contains unbridled access to the many stages of Mann's work, and is a rare glimpse of an eloquent and brilliant artist." www.zeitgeistfilms.com

The Art of Caring: A Look at Life through Photography
May 16 - October 11, 2009

The Art of Caring: A Look at Life through Photography comprises seven thematic components: Children and Family, Love, Wellness, Disaster, Caregiving and Healing, Aging, and Remembering. Through photography and film, this thought- and emotion-provoking exhibition provides a visual discourse on how key life events are celebrated and honored, and how pivotal life decisions are made by a number of different cultures. Each stage of life is depicted by simple everyday situations experienced in moments of joy and gratification as well as by poignant events of passage. The unfathomable scale of devastation inflicted upon humanity and our environment by both man-made and natural disasters also is intrinsic to this life story.

The selection of the more than two hundred photographs in this exhibition took shape like a complex and carefully composed mosaic in which the distinct fragments represent mothers, fathers, children, caregivers, first responders, and others from around the globe. For the viewer, encountering these photos on the walls of this exhibition is somewhat like taking a walk on a busy street in any one of a number of major metropolitan cities, where who or what you see is often a surprise impossible to plan for or predict, much like the cycle of our own respective lives.

The exhibition begins with a group of images by the world-renowned artist Annie Leibovitz, who made a special selection from her vast archive that reflects all seven themes. These images provide a concise introduction to the entire exhibition. The Art of Caring showcases several works from Time & LIFE Pictures, including recognizable classics by such legendary photographers as Alfred Eisenstaedt and W. Eugene Smith. Contemporary artists include other established photographers such as Tina Barney, Nan Goldin, Chester Higgins, Sally Mann, Nicholas Nixon, Tatsumi Orimoto, Robert Polidori, Dona Schwartz, Neal Slavin and Larry Sultan. The exhibition features as well the work of emerging artists Elinor Carucci, Jeff Charbonneau, Eliza French, Peter Granser, Jessica Todd Harper and Misty Keasler.

Opening reception: Saturday May 9th, 6-10pm

The Front
4100 St. Claude Ave., nolafront@gmail.com

Utilizing the early DaDaist use of montage, I want to explore the possibilities of photography in the digital era on determining what is considered to be representational, document-like, or narrative in content. Contradictions in context, and color, are employed to create images that can be both fantastic and absurd, disturbing and beautiful.

Caution: Objects in the frame may be more rendered than materially perceived. Please proceed with reckless abandon toward the exit in a conceptual manner. Discordant side effects not solely attributed to reproduction may include: hallucinatory spectacles, retinal dismemberment of the “Natural World”, contextual time/space fluctuations, still frame mobilization, and residual commonplace anomalies.

New Yorker Magazine Image Request

Hello:

Hope all is well and that you are enjoying spring! I am a picture researcher at the New Yorker and I am researching images for an upcoming fiction story, and wonder if any members of the New Orleans Photo Alliance may have work that could accompany the story. I would truly appreciate you forwarding the request to all members. Unfortunately, we are under a tight deadline and will be viewing images tomorrow.

The story is contemporary (within the last 20 years) and takes place in North Mississippi. The images don’t have to be from North Mississippi, but they should be from the south and highlight the lushness and growth of the Southern landscape. The overall tone is moody and foreboding, there is a strong sense of southern history throughout the piece. The focus of the story is a run down mansion/house and a man’s attempt to restore this house that his been in his family for generations. He describes the wild and weed-wracked overgrown lawn, the patches of fallen plaster from the walls, the sagging celing, warped pine flooring and the storm dented iron roof. The house is a huge project to fix up and Julian hires help – Obie. Obie is a bible reading fifty year old lean fellow who is having his skin lasered to remove the tattoos from his covered body. His skin is described as a cloudy blue-gray.

To accompany the story, we are looking for the below images. But, please don’t limit yourself, the most important thing in the image is the mood and the feeling of the Southern landscape.

* A dramatic image of a romantically run down rural mansion/house in the south
* An image of the lushness of the rural Southern landscape that incorporates some aspect of the mansion
* Tattoos on a man (either detail shots, or images of tattoos peaking out of clothes)
* Image incorporating a bible in the interior of a run down home
* Image of an old typewriter

Many thanks for forwarding this request along. We are under a very tight deadline, please send medium res versions (150dpi at 10”) by Wednesday May 6. Thanks again, and feel free to call or email me with any questions.

Best,

Jessie

Lesley Martin, Publisher of the Aperture Book Program, will be the juror for the 2009 Photo Review Photography Competition. The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed critical journal of photography, is sponsoring its 25th annual photography competition with a difference. Instead of only installing an exhibit that would be seen by a limited number of people, The Photo Review will reproduce accepted entries in its 2009 competition issue and on its website. Thus, the accepted photographs will be seen by thousands of people all across the world and entrants will have a tangible benefit from the competition.

Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. And a major traveling exhibition in 2010 will feature entrants from 25 years of The Photo Review Competition.

Because their work was seen in The Photo Review, past winners have been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in other leading photography magazines, and have sold their work to collectors throughout the country.

Awards include a $500 purchase prize for The Philadelphia Museum of Art, a copy of SilverFast HDR Studio digital camera RAW conversion software from LaserSoft Imaging ($499), a $270 gift certificate from Lensbabies for a Composer lens or other items on the Lensbaby.com webstore, a $250 gift certificate from Calumet Photographic, a 24"x50' roll of Museo Silver Rag ($240 value), a 20"x24" silver gelatin fiber print from Digital Silver Imaging ($215 value), camera bags from Lowepro, and $250 in cash prizes.
