Funding for Documentary Photographers

Funding for Documentary Photographers
Deadline June 19, 2009

The Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to documentary photographers who have already completed a significant body of work on issues of social justice to collaborate with a partner organization and propose new ways of using photography as a tool for positive social change.

All photographers must have another entity (such as a nonprofit, NGO, or community-based organization) that will work with the photographer to design an innovative distribution strategy that targets specific communities and advocates for social change.

To be eligible for support, proposals must: present strong images that are contextualized, when necessary, with text, sound, or other media; address a current social justice issue (preference will be given to work that coincides with the issues and geographical areas that concern OSI); and engage a specific audience, community, and/or site and use creative distribution strategies that are tailored specifically for that context. Applicants must partner with an organization that will provide administrative, programmatic, and financial and/or in-kind support.

Grants of $5,000 to $30,000 each will be awarded.

Dear Artists and Arts Enthusiasts,

Join us on Tuesday, April 28th at 7 PM for "Photography: The Index", the April meeting of our "Art Sessions: A Series of Discussions on Visual Contemporary Art" panel series. The photograph literally reflects its subject, inscribing its trace onto a light-sensitive surface. This fact forms a unique connection between the photograph and that which it describes. This panel considers the indexical nature of photography by looking at contemporary projects in a discussion with photographers Jerry Spagnoli, Deborah Luster, duo Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick, and freelance curator Eva Diaz; moderated by photographer Stephen Hilger. To what extent does photography's indexicality--its link to what is real--remain as the medium continues to evolve away from traditional photographic materials toward digital technologies? Suggested donation $3.00. Discussion will be held at LouisianaArtWorks, 725 Howard Avenue at Carondelet.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Braasch Images Featured on UN Stamps

Some exciting news about our Elemental/Environmental: SPACE juror, Gary Braasch via The Maine Photo Workshops.

Braasch Images Featured on UN Stamps

The images of environmental photographer and Workshops instructor, Gary Braasch were published by the United Nations in a set of six international postage stamps
illustrating climate change

This is one of the few times a single photographer provided the images for a full set of stamps, the information booklet and first day covers - 30 photos in all.  The stamps are part of a worldwide UN drive to encourage action to limit global warming.  The book from which many of the images were drawn, Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming is Changing the World, will be released in a paperback edition in Spring 2009 with praise from Al Gore and Bill McKibben.

Gary is an assignment photographer forSmithsonianAudubonDiscover and Natural History magazines on environment stories. Recent assignments have taken him from Antarctica to the Peruvian Amazon and under the Pacific Ocean. He will lead his Nature & the Environmentworkshop in Rockport July 5 – 11.

April Programming meeting

The Programming Committee will meet Tuesday, April 21, 7:00 p.m. at the NOPA Gallery, 1111 St. Mary St.

The Programming Committee is responsible for developing
exhibitions, educational events, public forums, and exchange
programs with other similar institutions.

We have a couple of major things to concentrate our energies on: the Oct/Nov gallery show (a juried show entitled, “The Spirit World”) and the production of the Best of 2009 Photo Annual. For the gallery show we need your input on writing the call to artists and selecting a juror. For the Photo Annual we need a team of members to begin working on the details of the selection process as well as the down and dirty production of this beast.

As always, new ideas for NOPA Programming are always welcome. If you are unable to attend and want your ideas heard please email me @ thomnola@yahoo.com. I will present them for you.

Remember, your voice is the voice of the Photo Alliance so come and be heard. We have a lot to do and it doesn’t get done without you! Look forward to seeing you there. There will be pizza; BYOB.

Photographers are Discriminated against by the city of New Orleans

Photographers and Digital artists are unfairly banned from displaying their works in Jackson Square. There is a 60 year old law designed to prohibit photographers from displaying in Jackson Square. Please sign the petition to over turn this law.

The law was created because other artists think that photography "would ruin the Square," read article. There is a small group of artists, the Jackson Square Artists Committee, whom create and enforce the rules for the artists around the square. This committee will actually have you arrested if you attempt to display your prints around the square.
Please sign the petition to over turn the law.

Recently artists, whom want to be able to sell art reproductions, attempted to join the Jackson Square artist committee. Just before the voting the committee created a law that banned these younger artists from being nominated, read article. The Jackson Square Artists Committee has monopolized the square and we need to let the city know that the Photographic and Digital Artists should not be discriminated against.

Please sign the petition to help fight this law and pass the link along to as many people as possible!

Meghan Kirkwood
Ecology Within the Frame: An Investigation of Two Landscapes

April 7 – 17, 2009
closing reception: Friday, April 17th, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

. . . this exhibition serves as a proposal. It is divided into three parts, where each discusses the specific qualities
ecological photography must present in order to properly portray the respective landscape: interconnectedness,
dynamism within the frame, and human positioning within the biotic community. . . I ask the viewer to think about
how they visually position themselves in relation to the landscape.

L.J. Goldstein Exhibition at The Darkroom

The Darkroom Gallery is proud to present "The Sacred Area - Photographs of the Middle East", the first ever, full color, all digital show of New Orleans-based photographer L.J. Goldstein.

The show will open Wednesday, April 22nd 6-8pm at The Darkroom Gallery's Lower Garden District showspace at 1927 Sophie Wright Place.

Known primarily for his award winning emotionally evocative medium format black and white photographs of New Orleans African American street culture, this show is a very successful departure marking a new vision in both form and content.
The Sacred Area is both a reference to religiosity of the Middle East, and to the photographs themselves. “Photographs are not pieces of reality,” Goldstein says, “photographs at their best, are this four cornered sacred area where form and content meet truth and beauty.”

In this series, documentary questions as to who, what, where, when of the subject matter of the photographs are completely overshadowed by the holy eternal artistic fib - the question of why – they speak to something outside the picture frame that is mysterious, frightening, funny, and not at all what you would expect.

Proceeds from sales from this show will go to benefit the New Orleans Photo Alliance and the Backsteppers Social and Pleasure Club.

MICHAEL P. SMITH - TWENTY-FIVE JAZZ FESTS @ CAC

The moments captured in Michael P. Smith music photographs are as familiar to the people of New Orleans as they are enthralling to Jazz Fest visitors. Since the first edition of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1970 until 2005, Smith documented the annual music, culinary and crafts bonanza that has become one of the city's signature events, and his photographs annually line the Gospel, Blues, and Jazz tents, paying witness to past performances in those same tents. In fact, the visual iconography of Jazz Fest as a showcase for legendary musical performance must be at least partly credited to Smith's images, which have been captured in two full-length Jazz Fest books that helped spread the word to fans around the world.

This exhibition will bring together one hundred twenty-five photographs taken at Jazz Fest during a twenty-five year period, from its inception in 1970 to 1995. All works come from the Michael P. Smith Archive of the Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC), who have graciously lent objects from their collection, as well as allowing many new prints to be made of some Jazz Fest images that have never been exhibited. On view in the first floor galleries.

In addition, Beyond the Music, a corresponding exhibition, is on view through August 29 at The Historic New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal St. Beyond the Music (at HNOC) features over 80 Smith photographs that take viewers on a journey into the city's spiritual churches, second lines, Mardi Gras Indians, social aid and pleasure clubs, and more.

Twenty-Five Jazz Fests is presented as part of In the Spirit: The Photography of Michael P. Smith from The Historic New Orleans Collection and is funded under a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Support also comes from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc.

(On view in the Lupin Foundation galleries.)

Gallery Hours: Thurs.-Sun. 11am - 4pm

Admission: FREE through July 12

Interview with Susana Raab

Finger Lookin' Good, London, Kentucky 30x40 C-Print

2008 PhotoNOLA Portfolio Review Prize Winner Susana Raab shares some of her thoughts this month. Interview by Ann Marie Popko.

How do you describe your photographic style?
My photographic style really depends upon the project I am working on and what I am trying to say, I am a chameleon that way, and I get bored doing the same thing. Also I think different modalities benefit the entire conversation. So for a project like Consumed, where I am exploring the pomp, circumstance, and addiction to the melodrama of fast food, my style is quirky, tongue and cheek, and heavily lit for the most part, to create a color saturated hyper-reality. For my series, A Sense of Place, where I explore the homes of Southern writers who inspire me and my vision, the style is nostalgic, shot with a holga, and while most of the interiors are lit, you probably can't tell. I'm a bit peripatetic this way.

When and how did you start your career as a professional photographer?
I started out covering Congress for a newspaper called Roll Call, owned by the Economist. Following in the footsteps of Jackie Kennedy, I shot a column called "The Inquiring Papparrazzi" (pre the demise of Princess Di, I might add.) I got to stalk Congress people and ask them questions like, "If you were to sing a song at the Grammies, what would it be?" I would roll my eyes when one Congresswoman answered, "'I Believe I Can Fly', because I really do believe that." I would get a good laugh out of Congressmen like Bill Delahunt (MA) who playfully responded singing, "If you think I'm sexy, and you want my body!" Did I mention I was still in my twenties?

Who is your photographic hero?
My partner, Stephen Crowley, who shoots for The New York Times, is constantly creating and conceptualizing, not letting the parameters of photojournalism define him or his technique.

Do you have a photo motto or mantra?
It might suck being here, but it will make a much better story at the bar later.

If you weren't a photographer, what would you be doing?
Fiddlin' Freedom Fighting Folklorist - another atypical career path.

What are you currently working on?
Preparing the debut of a new project, Cholita es Bonita, about Peru, my birthplace.

What are your future creative goals?
1. To keep making a living following my bliss, doing whatever it takes.
2. To get Consumed published as a book.
3. Gallery representation on the US East and West coasts and in Europe.

Any upcoming shows/projects/news?
My project, Consumed, was just featured in PDN's Exposure's last month. I'm traveling to Lodz, Poland in May as a grand finalist of the Fotofestiwal there.
I've got a solo exhibition coming up in July at the Kunstlicht Gallery in Shanghai, called Super America, and another one later in July at the Dean Jensen Gallery of Milwaukee.

Anything else we should know?
Ummm, there's a lot we should all know, but figuring it out is half the fun!

Inside Art New Orleans Website

From Eric Bookhardt, art critic for Gambit Weekly:

Thanks for your interest in the Inside Art New Orleans web site, which has been truly amazing.

As of this week, we have a simpler new web address:

http://www.insidenola.org/

And an expansive new format with more useful links and news items.

The right sidebar now includes:

Gallery Updates--direct links to current exhibitions at leading Nola galleries.

Museums--links to local art museums and cultural institutions.

Major Media--all the leading art magazines and journals.

Plus links to strategic media sites in New York, London and Berlin, with others to be added
in the future (suggestions welcome).

A new section for selected news items and announcements appears in the left sidebar, and
of course our autonomously self-renewing Art News Updates continue as before.

This extends our evolution as a web portal for New Orleans and world art.

Hope you find it useful--and thanks again for your continued interest,
