Call for Entries: Works of Man

Theme: The drive to create is a strong one in humanity. Whether it is massive structures like the Pyramids or the Eiffel Tower, or the tiniest computer chip, humankind has always been driven to leave its mark on the planet. The Works of Man is an opportunity for artists to chronicle the indelible mark that has been made by these creations. With The Works of Man, The center for Fine Art Photography seeks to chronicle the drive to build, destroy, manufacture and dismantle, that resides in all of us. Images from the tallest building to the smallest child’s toy, the newest electric gadget to the oldest tool from the earliest people, truly anything created by the minds and hands of humanity will be considered for the show.

Eligibility: The exhibition is open to all domestic and international, professional and amateur photographers working with digital or traditional photography or combinations of both. The Center for Fine Art Photography invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental and mixed techniques are welcome.

Juror: Chris Jordan: Former corporate attorney turned photographic artist, Chris Jordan is best known for his large scale works depicting consumerism in the United States. Jordan’s 2005 book In Katrina's Wake: Portraits of Loss from an Unnatural Disaster is a powerful display of his artistry. In October 2007 Chris appeared on the Steven Colbert Report to discuss his body of work, Running the Numbers. Most recently Chris was chosen by National Geographic Channels International to serve as their Eco-ambassador for Earth Day, 2008. His work, while often unsettling, is a bold message about unconscious behaviors in our everyday lives, leaving it to the viewer to draw conclusions about the inevitable consequences which will arise from our habits. To see Jordan’s photography and learn more about his creative vision, visit ChrisJordan.com.

Desire & Friday Night at The Palace Reviewed in Gambit

Jackie Brenner

FEBRUARY 21, 2009
Friday Night at the Palace and Desire

BY D. ERIC BOOKHARDT

Near the intersection of St. Mary Street and Sophie Wright Place are two of Uptown's main photographic venues, the Darkroom and the New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery. Both feature similarly obsessive and shadowy subject matter: pool halls and desire. Jackie Brenner's Friday Night at the Palace pool-hall series hints at her better-known stripper studies. Featuring stark, black-and-white views executed in a style somewhere between film noir and social work, it suggests how gracefully dancer-like pool players can be. But where her strippers' inner lives were revealed in close-ups of personal detail, here the pool-player psyche appears in the facial expressions and body language of competitors armed with pool cues. So we are left with a sense of the game as chess for contortionists, as we see in an image of a player attempting a tricky shot with a cue behind his back (pictured).

Woman With Fox At Kent by Catherine Gomersall

Desire, at the Photo Alliance, can seem a little oblique at first, but that may have to do with curator Mayumi Lake's own proclivities as a photographer of quirky eroticism. The show runs the gamut from subtle to blatant, with the former including such ambiguities as Steffanie Halley's shot of a pretty redheaded girl sporting what may be a love hickey, or just a brush burn on her neck. Tones of pink and green run rampant through more glaring works articulating erotic quirks with John Waters-like abandon. Some of the most interesting images feature a sort of blatant ambiguity: Andrea Caldwell's cute girl sipping wine as the Iraq war unwinds on TV, or Catherine Gommersall's photo of a young woman having a meaningful relationship with a stuffed fox in a room that might make Waters green with envy.

Call for Entries: FEASTival Exhibition at Jazz Fest

FEASTival! ~ Forty Years at the Jazz Fest Table

For 40 Years, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell has prided itself on a world renowned menu steeped in the culinary heritage of Louisiana and its numerous cultural influences. We are seeking photographs that capture the joy and revelry that can only come from dining
at Jazz Fest. Our preference is for unusual and interesting photographs (not just a snapshot of a sandwich or plate of food) which convey that a
Jazz Fest experience is not complete until you've had something to eat.

Photographers are invited to submit images for consideration for this annual Jazz Fest Photography Exhibition. Images taken at Jazz Fest over the years
will be considered.

Photographers may submit up to six images. These may be in the form of actual photographs or CD and delivered by Friday, March 20 between 10 am & 5 pm to the Foundation office at 1205 N. Rampart St., corner of Gov.
Nicholls.

Those who prefer to submit electronically may send by Friday, March 20 an email including name, address and phone number to gallery@nojhf.org and up to 6 images in low resolution jpg files maximum 72 dpi, approximate size: 5"x7". Photographers will be notified by Monday March 30.

Accepted work must be framed, ready to hang and delivered to 1205 N. Rampart on Friday, April 17, between 10 am & 5 pm. The exhibition will open on Friday, April 24 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell.

GRANTS COMMITTEE INAUGURAL MEETING

The first meeting for the New Orleans Photo Alliance Grants Committee will be
Monday, February 16th
6:30pm
NOPA Gallery, 1111 St. Mary Street.

The main task of the NOPA Grants Committee will be to plan and facilitate the Michael P. Smith Grant for Documentary Photography. The annual grant will award one $5000 grant to a Gulf Coast photographer working on a sustained documentary project.

We need your ideas and time to help with this project. The Michael P. Smith Grant for Documentary Photography will become one of the lasting legacies of our collective.

If you have any questions, contact Lori Waselchuk at lori@loriwaselchukphotos.com

Programming Committee Meeting

The Programming Committee will meet Tuesday, February 17, 7:00 p.m. at the NOPA Gallery, 1111 St. Mary St.

The Programming Committee is responsible for developing
exhibitions, educational events, public forums, and exchange
programs with other similar institutions.

Two items need our immediate attention: the April/May time slot and Six Shooters. The April/May exhibit will be a member’s only Push Pin show and we need to work out the details. Six Shooters is planned for March 18 and we need to put together a team to manage our end of that event.

Looking forward: Our first Film Night will most likely be in June; we need a team to plan and implement that. The Aug/Sep exhibit needs to be planned; the overarching theme is “summer heat” so we need to take that and shape it into a very interesting exhibit. We will form a subcommittee which will define the theme further, write the call to artists, secure a juror, and work with the gallery on hanging the show. There is no better way to get to know your fellow NOPA members than working on an exhibit together. Lots of fun!

As always, new ideas for NOPA Programming are always welcome. If you are unable to attend and want your ideas heard please email me @ thomnola@yahoo.com. I will present them for you.

Remember, your voice is the voice of the Photo Alliance so come and be heard. We have a lot to do and it doesn’t get done without you! Look forward to seeing you there. There will be pizza; BYOB.

VP of Programming

Funding for Documentary Photographers

Funding for Documentary Photographers
Deadline June 19, 2009

The Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to documentary photographers who have already completed a significant body of work on issues of social justice to collaborate with a partner organization and propose new ways of using photography as a tool for positive social change.

All photographers must have another entity (such as a nonprofit, NGO, or community-based organization) that will work with the photographer to design an innovative distribution strategy that targets specific communities and advocates for social change.

To be eligible for support, proposals must: present strong images that are contextualized, when necessary, with text, sound, or other media; address a current social justice issue (preference will be given to work that coincides with the issues and geographical areas that concern OSI); and engage a specific audience, community, and/or site and use creative distribution strategies that are tailored specifically for that context. Applicants must partner with an organization that will provide administrative, programmatic, and financial and/or in-kind support.

Grants of $5,000 to $30,000 each will be awarded.

For more information, please visit http://www.soros.org/initiatives/photography/focus_areas/distribution/guidelines

(This is forwarded from the Arts Council of New Orleans)

DESIRE Opening Feb 7, Juror's Talk Feb 8

"amateur(to pursue for love)" by Steffanie Halley

New Orleans Photo Alliance Presents: DESIRE

The New Orleans Photo Alliance is pleased to present "DESIRE," a photographic group exhibition juried by Mayumi Lake. In curating this exhibition from a wide range of international entries, Lake, who is renown for her own work on the subject of illicit desires, chose 29 images that speak to the layered aspects of desire in a variety of ways.

Desire is an eager wish to possess or enjoy. Its objects range from the pious to the sensuous to the mundane. Desire is, by its nature, unsustainable. Desire is fleeting, but images last forever.

"DESIRE" will be on view from Feb. 7 through Mar. 21, 2009 at the New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery, 1111 St. Mary St. New Orleans, LA 70130. The opening reception takes place on Saturday, Feb 7, from 6-9pm.
Ms. Lake will present a Juror's Talk on Sunday Feb. 8 at 7pm. A preview of the exhibition can be seen online here.

"Desire drives us in every aspect of our lives. How can this desire be transformed into a photographic image? Upon selecting images for the show, I emphasized images that could trigger various emotional reactions in the viewers' minds: Attraction, longing, libido, fear, remorse, surprise, passion, obsession and pleasure. Every image in the show holds multiple layers of narrative, either extreme or subtle, and invites viewers to add additional layers of their imaginations." - Mayumi Lake
