Programming Committee Meeting

I would like to extend an invitation to all members who are interested in the Programming Committee to attend a meeting Tuesday, December 16, 7:00 p.m. at the NOPA Gallery, 1111 St. Mary St.

The Programming Committee is responsible for developing
exhibitions, educational events, public forums, and exchange
programs with other similar institutions.

We will decide on the April/May exhibit theme. The two that are up for discussion are 4X5: NEW VIEWS FROM A CLASSIC CAMERA and AGE: (no subtitle as yet) This exhibit is going to be a 2 - 5 person show centered around a common theme. By the end of the meeting we will have our theme chosen and a subcommittee to work on contacting photographers and other details.

We will also work on various things we will be doing during 2009, two of which are FILM NIGHTS and SIX SHOOTERS (a moderated panel discussion). We would like to do these on a quarterly basis and we will form subcommittees to handle the details. Ideas for other Programming are welcome and encouraged.

If you are unable to attend and want your ideas to be heard please email me @ thomnola@yahoo.com. I will present them for you.

Remember, your voice is the voice of the Photo Alliance so come and be heard. We have a lot to do and it doesn’t get done without you! Look forward to seeing you there. There will be pizza; BYOB.

Searching for Solace by Ted Jackson

Louisiana State Museum showcases the best in world photojournalism

“Visions of Excellence,” a collection of 50 extraordinary images from photojournalists around the world, opens December 5 at the Louisiana State Museum’s Arsenal Gallery at the Cabildo, Jackson Square. The exhibit is a focal point of PhotoNOLA, a citywide celebration of photography presented each December by the nonprofit New Orleans Photo Alliance.

“This is a rare opportunity for the community to experience the best of photojournalism in the best possible way, through a collection of large, masterfully printed images displayed in one of New Orleans’ most historic settings,” said Mark Sindler, President of the New Orleans Photo Alliance.

“Visions of Excellence” presents an extreme wide-angle view of the world, with photos selected from 44,000 submissions to the 65th-annual Pictures of the Year International competition. New Orleans is represented by Times-Picayune photographer Ted Jackson’s iconic image of a Hurricane Katrina survivor draped in an American flag.

The New Orleans Photo Alliance and the Louisiana State Museum will host a reception at the Cabildo on Saturday, December 13, from 6 to 9 p.m.

On Sunday, December 14, Dr. Tony Lewis, Louisiana State Museum’s Curator of Visual Arts, will present an illustrated talk entitled “From Szathmari to Magnum: The Origins of Photojournalism” (1:30 to 2:30 p.m.).

Following Dr. Lewis’ talk, Dr. Leslie Parr, Associate Professor at Loyola University’s School of Mass Communication, will lead a panel entitled “Promise and Peril: The Changing Face of Photojournalism.” Panelists include Doug Parker, Times-Picayune photo editor; Ted Jackson; Rick Shaw, Director, Pictures of the Year International; and freelance photographer Lori Waselchuk.

Ogden Museum Artist Discussions

Photography: Then and Now
Artist discussions focus on the imagery of life and death in Southern art and photography, and how 19th-century processes are applied to 21st-century photography

The process of photography—from the creative beginnings to final print—will be explored in two artists’ discussions at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

On Sun. Dec. 14, “Life and Death in Southern Art: From 19th-century Artists to Sally Mann,” will feature artist William Dunlap and Ogden Curator David Houston. They will discuss the evolution of how life and death have been portrayed in Southern art. Nineteenth-century still-life paintings of animals by George Louis Viavant, Marie-Paoline Casbergue Coulon, Achille Peretti and John James Audubon, as well as photographs from contemporary photographer Sally Mann’s current show at the Ogden, “What Remains,” reflect how art and science can merge into a work of beauty, or controversy. A gallery walk-through of the Mann exhibition, with commentary from Dunlap and Houston, will be part of the program.

On Wed. Dec. 17, “Revealing the Process: 19th-century Photographic Techniques in 21st-Century Photography,” Ogden curator David Houston, photographer and Ogden preparator Richard McCabe, and as well as a special guest will examine how contemporary photographers are exploring 19th-century photography processes and updating them for the 21st century. Many of Sally Mann’s images for “What Remains,” are created by a wet-plate collodian process, one that was used before, during and after the Civil War and Reconstruction. Mann also uses a 19th-century view camera—similar to one used by Civil War photographer Matthew Brady—with hand-ground, uncoated lenses. This, as well as other processes will be discussed.

What/When:
1) Sun. Dec. 14: “Life and Death in Southern Art: From 19th-century Artists to Sally Mann,”
2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

2) Weds. Dec. 17: “Revealing the Process: 19th-century Photographic Techniques in
21st-Century Photography,” 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission: Free to members; nonmembers: Free with museum admission ($10)
[Photo Alliance members receive a $2 discount!]

Mardi Gras 360 Degrees 2009 Correction

Lori Waselchuk, not that "Lorie Waselchuk" will be teaching at the Mardi Gras Workshop. A lot of people asked me at the Gala who was this workshop for, and my response was that its for everyone who wants to take their work to a higher level......and that includes the teachers, who all get as much out of this as anyone. At the price its a terrific bargain especially for locals....and a great chance to network with photographers from out of town.

By the way, that "Lori" Waselchuck did an amazing job curating the gun show...

Patricia Sills at BECA Gallery

Patricia Sills, known in the art world as “Muffin” will be showing a collection of her work at the BECA gallery, 527 Saint Joseph Street, in the heart of New Orleans Central Business District. The show will open Saturday, December 06, 2008.

Muffin Sills is a professor of Photography and Graphic design at Xavier University. She is a graduate of Loyola University’s art program and earned her Masters in Fine Art from Florida State University. She has shown work through out the country and is looking forward to sharing her unique art with her home city.

Muffin’s work explores the ideas of Identity and Aesthetic Surfaces. Patterns photographed from the varied aspects of nature become exteriors of her construction machine models. The Construction process itself can be at once both masculine and feminine. The destruction that must take place in the initial stages of any construction project is both violent and passionate. The subsequent structure that is erected represents new birth. Within the framework of Muffin’s identity baking has always been the embodiment of this sort of new birth. Documenting baking through photographic stills and video further emphasizes the human role that we each play in the creation of our own world and our own identity. Her work is a process of love, labor, and reward.
