Waiting for Gustav

Thanks to Bob Compton for sending this image.
We laugh to keep from crying...
For the real cone see the National Hurricane Center website.

What a way to mark the third anniversary of Katrina! Though fortunately for New Orleans predictions keep pushing it further westward, at present it still appears to be Louisiana bound. Feel free to use the comments section of this post to let us know your evacuation plans. And don't forget to pack your negatives.

Shall we revisit the idea of digital archiving at the next meeting? (Scheduled for Thursday, Sept 4 - Gustav permitting.) It was a hot topic when we first started forming in early 2006, but got pushed to the back burner after two peaceful storm seasons.

Stay safe everyone!!

Soho Photo Gallery to begin new season with "Sanctuary"

"Sanctuary," a group exhibition featuring six New Orleans photographers, will kick off the 37th season at New York's Soho Photo gallery. Running from September 4 to October 4, 2008, the exhibition will feature the work of Victoria Ryan, Samuel Portera, Lee Area, Eric Paul Julien, Jennifer Shaw and Michel Varisco-all of whom were inspired by the destruction and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The 30 images in the exhibition focus on the survival of the landscape, culture, and music of the Southern wetlands.

Gustav permitting, four of the artists will be in attendance for the opening next Thursday night and a Friday evening panel discussion to be moderated by Paul Moakly. Please come by if you're in the area! For more information click the link below.www.sohophoto.com

This year's 27th Howling Success is a Roaring 20’s tribute to the thousands of animals who have come through our doors over the past 120 years. All donors will receive recognition in the "Howling Success" program and a listing on our Web site www.la-spca.org. You will also receive priceless recognition from the hundreds in attendance who care so much about animals.

Your help is critical to our mission. Please consider making a donation. Simply complete the enclosed reply form and return it with your donation to the address indicated, or feel free to call and we'll arrange a pick up. And to ensure full recognition for your generous gift, please respond no later than September 10.

Odd Works - Deadline Approaching!

Odd Works
Juried By: David Rubin
Entries must be submitted by 8.25.2008

The New Orleans Photo Alliance is seeking atypical photo based work that incorporates photographic images in innovative ways. We are looking for images or objects that use materials as diverse as - but not limited to - paper, cloth, metal, wood, polymer, leaves, encaustic, etc, with photography as a main component of the final piece. Two and three dimensional works are eligible, but no LCD, video or projection.

Juror: David Rubin,
Curator of Contemporary Art, San Antonio Museum of Art
Mr. Rubin served as Curator of Visual Arts at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans from 2000-2006. From 1994-99, he was Curator of 20th Century Art at Phoenix Art Museum. Since 1980, Mr. Rubin has been a member of the International Association of Art Critics and, throughout the 1980s, he was a frequent contributor to Arts and Art in America magazines. Since 2001, he has been an international juror for the Florence Biennale. During his tenure at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, Mr. Rubin organized numerous exhibitions, including "Photography Now", an international survey of contemporary photography.

Selected entries will be exhibited during October and November, 2008 at the New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery, and will also be featured on the New Orleans Photo Alliance website. The exhibition will take place during PROSPECT.1 New Orleans, "the largest biennial of international contemporary art ever organized in the United States,” and represents a great opportunity to have your work seen by art enthusiasts, curators and collectors from around the world.

Deadline for submissions: Midnight, Monday, August 25
Notification of Acceptance: Tuesday, September 2
Opening: Saturday, Oct. 4
Exhibition: Saturday, October 4 - Saturday, November 22

For further submission details click here.

Experimental Printing Invitation

In the spirit of the Alliances' next gallery exhibit "Odd Works", I would like to invite up to 6 people to come to my house/studio to experiment with printing on different mediums. I will be buying a gallon of ink aid (coats the surfaces for the ink to stick) & everyone will have to pitch in for what they use. It will be Sunday 24th, so it still would give you 1 day to submit for the call for entry. Address is 4912 Transcontinental Dr. 7006. Please call me if your interested (504) 220-7756.

Programming Committee Meeting

Programming Committee Meeting

I would like to extend an invitation to all members who are interested in being on the Programming Committee to attend a meeting next Tuesday, August 19 at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at the NOPA Gallery, 1111 St. Mary St.

The Programming Committee is responsible for developing exhibitions, educational events, public forums, and exchange programs with other similar institutions.

The primary focus of this meeting will be to form subcommittees for the first three shows of 2009. Each subcommittee will be responsible for writing the call to artists, choosing and securing a juror, assisting the Exhibitions Coordinator in hanging the exhibit, overseeing the design and printing of the invite, etc. Lots of small jobs; all of them important! The general theme for Feb/Mar is "Desire"; April/May is TBD (a curated show?); June/July's general theme is "Weddings". We will begin working now so that our calls to artists go out 6 months prior to each exhibit. We also need to implement ways in which we can get our calls to artists out into the larger photo world so please bring some ideas for that.

Now that we have gotten through the dog days of summer we in Programming need to address our other responsibilities of providing educational events, public forums and exchange programs with other similar institutions. Let's have a brainstorming session about various things we can do in this regard.

If you are unable to attend and want your ideas to be heard please email me @ thomnola@yahoo.com. I will present them for you.

Remember, your voice is the voice of the Photo Alliance so come and be heard. Look forward to seeing you there!

Thom Bennett

Portfolio Review FAQs

Registration will open on August 15, 2008, and will be filled on a first come first served basis.

The Portfolio Reviews will take place on Dec. 6 & 7, 2008 at the International House Hotel, in downtown New Orleans.

The $425 registration fee will guarantee each participant 8 twenty minute reviews over the two days.

The total number of participants will be limited to 65 in order to guarantee 8 reviews for each photographer. After all the spots are filled we will start a waiting list in case there are any cancellations.

In advance of the review weekend, participants will be asked to list the reviewers they wish to see in order of preference, and every effort will be made to schedule meetings with the reviewers that each participant most wants to connect with.

You will receive your review schedule at check in, on the afternoon of Friday, Dec. 5 or the morning of Saturday, Dec. 6.

The registration process will be completed electronically, through the photonola.org website. Your $425 payment to the New Orleans Photo Alliance through PayPal must be completed at that time to guarantee your spot.

Participants of the Portfolio Reviews are eligible to stay at the International House Hotel at special PhotoNOLA rates, starting at $99 for a queen room. Be sure to mention "PhotoNOLA" when you make your reservation.

Participation in the Saturday evening Portfolio Walk is optional, but recommended. It will be open to the public and is a chance for the reviewers who wish to attend to see all the participating photographers work.

Cancellations before November 1st will be given refunds minus a $25 processing fee.

Cancellations after November 1st we will be issued a refund only if we can fill your spot with someone from the waiting list.

While we expect all the confirmed reviewers to be in attendance sometimes due to unforeseen circumstances there are late cancellations. In the unfortunate event that one or more of our selected reviewers should have to cancel we will make every effort to fill their spot with an equally high caliber reviewer.

It is generally recommended that photographers present an easy to handle portfolio containing 15-20 tightly edited prints from a cohesive body of work, preferably in its final presentation size. The review tables are fairly small, so photographers working in a larger scale might want to consider bringing smaller sample prints and a few large pieces rolled up.

JUST BECAUSE WE’RE KIDS

The group photo exhibition, curated by Rene Broussard, takes it’s title from a song from the 1953 children’s musical/comedy 5000 FINGERS OF DR. T with lyrics by Theodore Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss). It later became an anthem for Children’s rights when recorded by Tony Bennett on the Sesame Street inspired album “Playtime”.

“Now just because we're kids,
because we're sorta small,
because we're closer to the ground,
and you are bigger pound by pound,
you have no right, you have no right
to push and shove us little kids around....

Now just because your throat has got a deeper voice and lots of wind to blow it out,
at little kids who don’t dare shout,
you have no right, you have no right
to boss and beat us little kids about.

Just because you’ve whiskers on your face to shave,
you treat us like a slave,
so what...it’s only hair!

Just because you wear a wallet near your heart,
you think you’re twice as smart,
you know that isn’t fair.

But we’ll grow up some day, and when we do I pray,
We won’t just grow in size and sound
And just be bigger pound by pound
I’d hate to grow like some I know
Who push and shove us little kids around.”
