Exhibition Opportunity @ Surrey's
Hello there -
I am currently curating the front two walls of Surrey's Juice Bar (1418 Magazine) and would like to open this great opportunity for visibility in an established Lower Garden District brunch spot. I am opening this to the Photo Alliance first, and saying that I have a few criteria I would like to follow:
1. All work needs to be ready to hang, matted/backed, professionally framed or presented in a manner ready to sell.
2. All bodies of work need to be of a cohesive portfolio, or theme expressed.
3. All selected works need to be accompanied by title cards stating the:
title
medium
dimensions
price
+ bio sheet for Surrey's to hang.
Other than that it's up to you - I am looking for strong bodies of work that will work with the aesthetic of Surrey's, and showcase the work of the city's talented photographers.
Submitted Work:
- please submit via email (smitzack@gmail.com) Up to 10 digital files of your proposed work.
- in the titles, please put your: Title, Name, Dimensions of Final Print
I am currently looking to hang separate shows in August, September, October and November. and December. You will not get to pick the month you would like to show in. I will go on a first come first serve basis as work gets chosen.
Shows are put up in conjunction with each months Art Walk, and Surreys is open to hosting openings on those evening. This location is prime for folks doing the Julia->Magazine Walk - We will also advertise the openings in the local free press.
Please let me know if you have any questions, I look forward to seeing all of your work and presenting your work to the city.
Thanks
Zack

Josephine Sacabo Exhibit in Woodstock, NY

Josephine Sacabo
May 23 - June 30, 2008
Artist's Reception: Saturday, June 14, 5-7 pm
Galerie BMG, in collaboration with the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW) is proud to host an exhibition of photographs by internationally recognized photographer, Josephine Sacabo, coinciding with the artist's participation in the 2008 Summer Workshop and Lecture Series at CPW.
The exhibition will include selected images from two bodies of her work: "Nocturnes" and "Geometry of Echoes." "Nocturnes" continues the artist's exploration of the dream state, from the perspective of the moon looking in on the world, as if through a window. The images have been re-printed using the photogravure process, enhancing the subtle mystery of the dream / reality connection. "Geometry of Echoes" is a series dedicated to the memory of the artist's mother. According to Josephine, they are images of a woman seen through the eyes of a 6 year old child - impossibly beautiful as only the heart can perceive and remember her.
Josephine Sacabo lives and works mostly in New Orleans, where she has been strongly influenced by the unique ambience of the city. She is a native of Laredo, Texas, and was educated at Bard College, New York. Prior to coming to New Orleans, she lived and worked extensively in France and England. Her earlier work was in the photo-journalistic tradition, influenced by Robert Frank, Josef Koudelka, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. She now works in a very subjective, introspective style. She uses poetry as the genesis of her work and lists poets as her most important influences, among them Rilke, Baudelaire, Pedro Salinas, Vincente Huiobro, and Juan Rulfo.
The exhibition will be on display from May 23 though June 30, with an artist's reception scheduled for Saturday, June 14 from 5 - 7 pm. The same week-end, Ms. Sacabo will be presenting her workshop, "Images of the Psyche: Seeing the Unseen", at CPW on June 14 and 15. Her lecture, open to the public, is scheduled for Friday, June 13 at 8 pm.
Gallery hours are Friday through Monday, 11 am to 6 pm, or other times by appointment. For more information, please call 845-679-0027.
Lori Waselchuk Exhibit in Atlanta

LORI WASELCHUK: Grace Before Dying
Angola Prison Hospice Project, Louisiana. These poignant photographs explore the last days of terminally ill prisoners and the remarkably humane care given by prison Volunteers.
A life sentence in Louisiana means life. More than 85 percent of the 5,100 prisoners at Angola are expected to die there. Until the hospice program was created in 1998, prisoners died mostly alone and unattended in the prison hospital. Their bodies were buried in shoddy boxes in unmarked graves at Point Lookout, the prison cemetery. Angola inmates have long feared dying in prison. But a nationally recognized hospice program has changed that.

Programming Committee Meeting on Tuesday
I would like to extend an invitation to all members who are interested in being on the Programming Committee to attend a meeting Tuesday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the NOPA Gallery, 1111 St. Mary St.
The Programming Committee is responsible for developing exhibitions, educational events, public forums, and exchange programs with other similar institutions.
At this meeting we will spend a few minutes recapping Critter Fest, the opening of Critters and get an update on the progress of the Environmental show and the Odd Works show. We will then spend the bulk of our time mapping out our 2009 exhibition calendar. Bring any and all ideas for exhibits; we have slots for four shows to fill. We will also have a quick roundtable discussion about workshops the Photo Alliance could sponsor during the remainder of '08 and '09.
If you are unable to attend and want your ideas to be heard please email me @ thomnola@yahoo.com. I will present them for you.
Remember, your voice is the voice of the Photo Alliance so come and be heard. Look forward to seeing you there!

Hey -
Just wanted to give everyone an update on the good stuff that's shaping up for December.
We're finalizing the reviewer list for the PhotoNOLA Portfolio Reviews Dec 6 & 7, plan to open registration on July 15. Lots of great people are on board & lots of new faces this year. We should be able to accommodate 60 photographers, on a first come first serve basis. This year we'll also be adding a Portfolio Walk on the evening of 6th, for photographers participating in the reviews to exhibit their work to the general public.
Here's the December calendar as it currently stands. More things will certainly be added in the coming months.

PhotoNOLA Exibitions Listings
In an effort to get the word out earlier this year we need to know about any photo related exhibitions by August 1st, 2008. If you're having a December show we can list in our PhotoNOLA promotional materials please send all the pertinent information to info@photonola.org.
Late submissions will not be included in PhotoNOLA's print or website promotions. However, if you supply us with postcards relating to a December photography exhibition or event we will be happy to help distribute your materials at the Photo Alliance gallery and any informational tables we may set up at various events.
On this topic, we are also gathering a list of venues interested in hosting photographic exhibitions this December, as well as a list of photographers interested in showing work. We will make efforts to pair people up with appropriate spaces. The artist will be responsible for the framing and, in most cases, the hanging of the exhibition. If you'd like to be on the artist list, or know of a willing venue for hanging artwork, please email info@photonola.org.

Call for Submissions - Press Street
Press Street and Rebuilding Together invite you to submit text and photographs for a new book on New Orleans' recovery.
We want to hear your stories of the incredible renaissance of community led initiatives since the storm.
The book spotlights the resilience and creativity of local individuals and groups who have rallied to fill the civic voids left in the wake of the destruction: those who hand-painted replacement street signs, turned their restaurants or homes into soup kitchens, and started or reopened businesses against all odds; citizen groups who tend our parks, clean our streets, lobby for stronger levees, and organize campaigns to counter crime and violence; artists and cultural institutions whose work helps people stay hopeful and engaged.
We will feature stories from across the city's varied demographics to present an inspiring reflection of the strength and resolve of ordinary New Orleanians rebuilding in extraordinary ways.
The book will be a large, full-color, hardback. Submissions should be between 250 and 750 words and all photographs must have the full permission of the photographer. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Preservation Resource Center's Rebuilding Together program.
Please send submissions or forward us the contact information for stories you think would be appropriate to Tristan Thompson at
ourneworleansrecovery@gmail.com
or
3161 Burgundy St.
New Orleans, LA 70117
Deadline for submissions is July 15th.
Thanks for your contribution.

CDS / Honickman First Book Prize Competition
First Book Prize Overview
The Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke University and The Honickman Foundation (THF), based in Philadelphia, co-sponsor this prestigious biennial prize for American photographers. The only prize of its kind, the CDS / Honickman First Book Prize competition is open to American photographers of any age who have never published a book-length work and who use their cameras for creative exploration, whether it be of places, people, or communities; of the natural or social world; of beauty at large or the lack of it; of objective or subjective realities. The prize will honor work that is visually compelling, that bears witness, and that has integrity of purpose.
Renowned photographer and writer Robert Adams was the prize's inaugural judge. Maria Morris Hambourg, Curator in Charge of the Department of Photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, judged the second biennial competition. The judge for the third competition (2006) was Robert Frank, one of America's most important and influential photographers. Mary Ellen Mark will be the judge of the fourth prize competition in fall 2008. The winning photographer receives a grant of $3,000, publication of a book of photography, and inclusion in an exhibition of prizewinners. The judge also writes the introduction for the book, which will be published by Duke University Press in association with CDS Books of the Center for Documentary Studies.
American photographers who are pursuing work of creative or social importance have too few opportunities for support and recognition. This is especially true when photographers are engaged in personal or in-depth projects that do not have direct commercial appeal. While there are other sources for grants and fellowships in photography, the chance to see a body of work in print, as a coherent book-length work, is rare. Concerned about this problem and recognizing their shared interests, CDS and THF came together to create this important book-publication prize.
Submissions for the next competition, following guidelines format, must be postmarked between June 9 and September 5, 2008.
The winning photographer will be announced publicly in January 2009. The book will be published in fall 2009.
