Wet Plate Collodion Workshop with Ellen Susan is a success!

The Wet Plate Collodion Workshop, conducted by Ellen Susan March 22 and 23, was a great success. A full class of nine participants enjoyed two hands-on creative days learning this beautiful process. Thanks to the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts for hosting this event at their darkroom facilities. Ellen brought her wet plate cameras and all the materials needed and each student had an opportunity to be sitter, camera operator, plate coater, and plate processor. Both tin and glass plates were created during the weekend. Thanks to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this event happen (Owen Murphy, Jen Shaw and Victoria Ryan to name a few).

Call to Artists - Critters: Juried by Keith Carter

The New Orleans Photo Alliance is pleased to announce a Call to Artists for Critters: Juried by Keith Carter.

"A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song." Chinese Proverb

Animals have been represented in art since the time of cave drawings. Throughout our history we have shared this planet with them; they have been our companions, our protectors, and our nourishment. This show will be a modern look, through the eyes of photographers, at how we interact with animals as well as how they interact with us and their own worlds.

Keith Carter is an internationally recognized photographer and educator. He holds the endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas and is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Regional Survey Grants and the Lange-Taylor Prize from The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. He has published nine monographs including "Heaven of Animals", "Bones", and "Ezekial's Horse". Called "a poet of the ordinary" by the Los Angeles Times, Mr. Carter's haunting, enigmatic photographs have been widely exhibited in Europe, the U.S., and Latin America as well as being included in numerous permanent collections.

Funding for Documentary Photographers

Deadline June 20, 2008

The Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to documentary photographers who have already completed a significant body of work on issues of social justice to collaborate with a partner organization and propose new ways of using photography as a tool for positive social change.

All photographers must have another entity (such as a nonprofit, NGO, or community-based organization) that will work with the photographer to design an innovative distribution strategy that targets specific communities and advocates for social change.

To be eligible for support, proposals must: present strong images that are contextualized, when necessary, with text, sound, or other media; address a current social justice issue (preference will be given to work that coincides with the issues and geographical areas that concern OSI); and engage a specific audience, community, and/or site and use creative distribution strategies that are tailored specifically for that context. Applicants must partner with an organization that will provide administrative, programmatic, and financial and/or in-kind support.

Grants of $5,000 to $30,000 each will be awarded.

For more information, please visit http://www.soros.org/initiatives/photography/focus_areas/distribution/guidelines

THE 2008 PHOTO REVIEW PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Julie Saul, owner of one of New York City’s most prestigious contemporary photography and art galleries, will be the juror for the 2008 Photo Review Photography Competition. The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed critical journal of photography, is sponsoring its 24th annual photography competition with a difference. Instead of only installing an exhibit that would be seen by a limited number of people, The Photo Review will reproduce accepted entries in its 2008 competition issue and on its website. Thus, the accepted photographs will be seen by thousands of people all across the world and entrants will have a tangible benefit from the competition.

Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and will be exhibited on The Photo Review’s website.

Because their work was seen in The Photo Review, past winners have been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in other leading photography magazines, and have sold their work to collectors throughout the country.

Awards include a Microtek ArtixScan M1 Dual Media Scanner ($650), a copy of SilverFast HDR Studio digital camera RAW conversion software from LaserSoft Imaging ($499), a Lensbaby 3G Lens and Wide Angle / Telephoto kit ($359), camera bags from Lowepro ($200 and $100), a $250 gift certificate from Calumet Photographic, a $250 gift certificate for Museo Fine Art Paper, two $50 gift certificates from Sprint Systems, and $250 in cash prizes.
An entry fee of $30 for up to three prints, slides, or images on CD and $5 each for up to two additional images entitles all entrants to a copy of the catalogue. In addition, all entrants will be able to subscribe to The Photo Review for $35, a 20% discount.

All entries must be received by mail between May 1 and May 15, 2008.

For a prospectus and details, send a self-addressed, stamped business-size (#10) envelope to: The Photo Review, 140 East Richardson Avenue, Suite 301, Langhorne, PA 19047. The prospectus may also be downloaded from The Photo Review website, www.photoreview.org. For further information call 215/891-0214.

Also on the website, you can view the work of the prizewinners from the last several years. This year for the first time, all the accepted entries from 2007 are posted as well as several other web shows drawn from last year's competition.

THE PHOTO REVIEW

Programming Committee Meeting

I would like to extend an invitation to any members
who are interested in being on the Programming
Committee to attend a meeting next Tuesday, March 18
at 7:00 p.m. at the NOPA Gallery, 1111 St. Mary St.

The Programming Committee is responsible for
developing exhibitions, educational events, public
forums, and exchange programs with other similar
institutions.

At the last meeting we were able to plan our gallery
shows for 2008 as well as discuss other Programming
ideas such as Film Nights, various Workshops, Social
Events and Community Outreach.

This meeting will concentrate on making these ideas
become reality. We have quite a few events coming up
and we want to make sure that we have everything in
place to make each one successful. We also need to
figure out a Programming Budget so, along with
whatever ideas you want to present try to have an idea
of what costs are involved so we can put it in the
yearly budget. At the end of the meeting I would like
for everyone to share some ideas about gallery shows
for 2009.

If you are unable to attend and want to be heard
please email me your ideas @ thomnola@yahoo.com. I
will present them for you.

Remember, your voice is the voice of the Photo
Alliance so come and be heard. Look forward to seeing
you there!

Thom Bennett
VP of Programming

P.S. There will be pizza! BYOB.

Images Needed for Random House Book Cover

Random House is looking for image submissions for an upcoming book. Needed are 'iconic' images of New Orleans, NOT the usual tourist stuff; something that embodies the 'old soul' of the city. No Katrina or Mardi-Gras related images please. Also no people. Possibly an old statue in a graveyard, or an architectural detail?

Deadlines are very rapid in this business so they need to see any submissions ASAP. Please do not send jpegs or hi-res files, only links to images or websites.

Please direct emails with links to Mary McClean at mmcclean@randomhouse.com.
