Ellen Susan's jewel-like photographs of contemporary American soldiers are at once intimate and revelatory. Utilizing the antique wet plate collodion process, she photographs soldiers primarily from the Army's 3rd Infantry Division in her own community. Within each one of a kind glass plate negative Susan reaches beyond the uniforms and explores in stunningly minute detail the individuality of each soldier. "The anonymous visual presentation of multitudes of soldiers on television, newspapers and the internet became disconcerting, and I wanted to make pictures that focused on each soldier as a unique person who happened to be wearing a uniform," says Susan. By using the beautiful yet arduous wet plate collodion process she carries on a tradition that harkens back to the Civil War.

Ellen Susan lives in Savannah, Georgia. She studied photography at the Massachusetts College of Art, and earned an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. The Soldier Portrait series was recently featured in an article on PopPhoto.com, American Photo’s online magazine, and was also selected for inclusion in Photo-Eye’s Photographer’s Showcase Gallery. The Photo Alliance is proud to present the first solo exhibition of this compelling work. In mid-February Susan will return to New Orleans to teach a wet plate collodion workshop.

Ellis Marsalis III Gallery Talk

Photo Alliance Gallery
1111 St. Mary St.
Sunday, Dec 2 4:30pm

"Ellis L. Marsalis, III, will deliver a photo-reading of his acclaimed
book, "Tha Bloc: words, photographs and baltimore city in black, white
and gray." Featuring prose in sync with black and white photography,
the book is a photo narrative in the tradition of W. Eugene Smith and
Larry Clark. In his photo-reading, Marsalis discusses many of the
mythologies of poverty, race, and educational access carried by those
on the bloc, and off the bloc. Marsalis received a B.F.A. in
photography from the Tisch School for the Arts at New York University.
His work has been seen in galleries nationwide, including the Stella
Jones Gallery. In 2007 he was commissioned by the Smithsonian
Institution to create a multimedia exhibit of "Tha Bloc." The exhibit
premiered at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in June.

Dec 15 Street Fair Registration Is Open

Hello All,

I am pleased to open the PhotoNOLA Photo Alliance Street Fair to our members. It will take place in the 1100 block of St. Mary Street, between Magazine and Sophie Wright Place, from 10am – 3pm on Saturday, December 15th.

The idea behind the block party and street fair is to give our members a venue to make some holiday sales, bring attention to our new location, raise awareness of our organization, and have some fun in the process. :)

This is to be both a street fair and a holiday art market, so whether you want
to have a booth to promote your photography business, sell some prints, books or other photo related items, or just come down and party with us, we would love to have you!

Juan's Flying Burrito has signed on to have a food booth and I will keep you
posted on those developments.

The fee for participation as a vendor is $25. This fee goes to paying for the permit and detail cops. There is a limited amount of space and we are opening this opportunity up to members only.

We will be getting a big tent donated from the Sheriff’s Office!! If you have your own tent set-up, please feel free to bring it.

Participants are encouraged to bring six-foot tables. (They can be purchased for around $35 – check the holiday sale ads.) If you would like to rent a table from the Photo Alliance we have a limited quantity available and can offer them on a first come first serve basis for $5.

To sign up or if you have any questions please email me at:
celestemarshallphoto@mac.com

Please include the following information:
Name
Phone number
Email
Address
Set-up (table and tent, or just table)
A brief description of what you will be presenting

This will be the last big event of PhotoNOLA and we are hoping you will all come
out and join us!

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION at Stella Jones

Just a friendly reminder that this Saturday, Dec. 1st, is Skip Bolen's Opening Reception of his latest work in the group photography show at the Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans.

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
Presented by Stella Jones Gallery

Freedom of Expression, a group photography exhibit of works by Skip Bolen, William Anderson Jr., and Eric Paul Julien in conjunction with the photography exhibit Balance of Grays: The Bloc Gets Even by Ellis L. Marsalis III. The exhibition opens Saturday, December 1st at the Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans.

Skip Bolen is primarily known for his jazz photography, however he is also known for his nostalgic take on the depth, emotions and richness of historic architectural imagery, of classic vintage signs, landmarks and notable scenes in New York, Hollywood and his hometown of New Orleans. Other works include documenting the disappearing historic landscape of water towers, telephone poles, and architecture taken primarily at night and early evening with available light. Stella Jones Gallery will exhibit a selection from this body of Skip Bolen's work: eight large color polaroids of New Orleans cemeteries entitled "The Calm Before The Storm" and a selection of large black and white photographs of notable architecture and vintage signs.
The large 16 x 20 inch color polaroids of various New Orleans tombs and mausoleums with a wall of dark ominous clouds of a threatening storm approaching appear as color infrared-like images in intense rich blues and ivory colors. The resulting pieces are both boldly aggressive and seductively subtle. The large 32 x 45 inch (40 x 60 inch framed) black and white photograph of the first Buds Broiler opened in 1952 on City Park Avenue in New Orleans still standing and untouched by Katrina appears the same today as it did 55 years ago. The photograph is a strikingly bold example taken from Skip Bolen's black and white architectural series.

make the exhibition an annual event! I would like to personally invite you
to be a part of Southern Open 2008 by sending in your submission today.

Juried by Peter Frank, an accomplished art critic from Los Angeles, Southern
Open 2008 will be held May 10 – July 26 at the Acadiana Center for the Arts

exhibition that showcases the best of southern arts and crafts. Our Main

types of mediums: painting, photography, crafts, sculpture and multi-media
installations.

Once again, the exhibition is open to visual artists over 18 years of age
currently residing in one of the following southern states: Texas,
Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. No students, please.

This year we have increased the award amounts and are introducing Purchase
Awards, all of which will be announced at the exhibition’s opening
receptions on May 9th and 10th at the AcA.

Also new in 2008, AcA members may enter up to five free submissions.
Additional submissions, up to 10 total, are $5 each. Individual AcA
memberships are $50 for one year. If accepted into the exhibition, AcA
artist members will receive a complementary exhibition catalog, which is a

Visit www.AcadianaCenterfortheArts.org/SouthernOpen2008 to download the
exhibition prospectus, and remember that the deadline for submissions is
February 11, 2008. Please forward this message along to anyone who might be
interested in participating this year.

I hope that you will join me for another spectacular show that’s sure to be
full of southern flair!

Cheap Shot Exhibition at PCNW

Cheap Shot, Plastic Cameras: the low tech of high art
feauring Michelle Bates, WA, Susan Burnstine, CA, Rosanna Salonia, AZ, Gordon Stettinius, VA, Shannon Welles, WA, Jennifer Shaw, LA.
November 2- 28, 2007
Photographic Center Northwest
900 Twelfth Avenue
Seattle , WA 98122

(206) 720-7222
www.pcnw.org

The exhibition, Cheap Shot: the low tech of high art, refers to the making of stellar art with inexpensive toy cameras, roughly a $20 commitment. These cameras can reveal mysterious ways of interpreting the world around us, even with light leaks, irregular vignetted corners and soft focus at times. These artists shoot their surroundings through their various types of plastic camera lenses. The photographs range from simple humorous snap-shot like moments to contemplative wonders of the natural and traveled world.

What else do these six artists have in common besides their plastic camera lenses? They are all well accomplished and have been sharing their work at the many portfolio review events throughout the country, such as Photolucida in Portland, Review Santa Fe, & Fotofest in Houston. The international portfolio review events are fantastic direct avenues for sharing work and networking with the larger photography community in the U.S, including artists, well known curators, museum directors and gallery owners! It was through these gatherings that this show of plastic camera imagery came together by PCNW’s Gallery Director. Each artists’ vision is unique and printing techniques vary with toners, beeswax and varnished finishes.

Michelle Bates, well known in Seattle for being a Holga Camera Fanatic, has shown her work in solo exhibitions in the Pacific Northwest, Los Angeles and Israel ,and in group shows in New York, Texas, California, and Italy. She has photographed for weekly newspapers, album covers, performers, artists, and many others. Michelle has presented lectures and workshops on plastic and toy cameras around the US, including to the Society for Photographic Education, SF Camerawork, and the Creative Center for Photography. Her book, "Plastic Cameras: Toying with Creativity" was published in late 2006 by Focal Press. She teaches at the Photographic Center Northwest, the Julia Dean Workshops (LA) and at International Center of Photography in New York.

Michelle Bates, Tree with Nests

Los Angeles based photographer, Susan Burnstine, builds homemade medium format cameras and lenses out of plastic, vintage camera parts and random household objects. Effects are created entirely In-Camera. The result of this creative endeavor is apparent in her series, On Waking Dreams. It explores that fleeting moment between dreaming and waking--the blurred seconds in which imagination and reality collide. Susan earned B&W Magazine's Excellence Award for the 2006 Portfolio Contest, and she's been featured in Black and White Photography Magazine, Shots Magazine, Professional Photographer Magazine, Kamera & Bild Magazine, Camera Arts and has been nominated for the 2007 Aperture West Book Prize.

Susan Burnstine, When?

In Rosanna Salonia’s Universi series, nature, beauty and human folly are explored. She wanders the earth searching for magic which she sometimes is able to capture through her Holga lens and her serendipitous manipulations. She is interested in capturing the sublime qualities of an experience and bringing them to the viewer in the most sensual manner she is able to concoct. Her gelatin silver prints are manipulated with a variety of photographic and household materials - pure beeswax allows her to incapsulate, preserve and solidify the photographic objects she creates. Often these are presented in found wooden boxes, allowing the viewer to touch and smell as well as see and feel. Hailing from Milan, Italy, Rosanna receives a BFA in Fine Art Photography and a BA in Art History from the University of Arizona, Tucson, in 2000. Her works have been exhibited and published in the US, Argentina, Italy, France, Germany, the UK, and Japan. They can be found in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, The University of Arizona Special Collections, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, and the International Center of Photography in Verona, Italy.

Rosanna Salonia

In walking with her camera, Jennifer Shaw of New Orleans, finds the act of seeing a process of emotional intuition. Her images serve as evidence of her strange and wonderful findings.
Shaw photographs with the toy Holga camera; it’s simplicity lends spontaneity to the act of photographing. It offers little control in making exposures, but she has learned to compensate for this in the darkroom. She creates images that transcend literal description, to provoke an emotional response to the subject matter, be it landscape or shadow or car. Shaw conveys a sense of time and place that is beautiful and sensual and serene. She received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, in 1994. She currently works as a freelance photographer, with a concentration on her personal work and custom portraiture. She teaches photography part-time at the Louise S. McGehee School. Jennifer’s work has been featured in B&W Magazine, Shots, Light Leaks Magazine and The Sun. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally, and are held in both private and public collections, including the Huntsville Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

Jennifer Shaw, Stolen Car

Gordon Stettinius has been using the Diana and Holga Cameras and other low tech and vintage box cameras for nearly twenty years. Gordon’s images are from a diaristic body of work entitled Gord Is Dead. These photos are a medley of a sort. In his life, there are children and loved ones and juice spills and helium voices. Just beneath the surface though, is sentimentality and concern and, of course, some unsightly weight gain and then probably incontinence. The images are evocative of response in and of themselves. As the images mingle through the modern miracle of editing, they create various undertones and arrive at all manner of daunting syllogisms. Gordon Stettinius lives and works in Richmond, Virginia where he teaches in the Art Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. His toy camera work has been featured commercially on bookjackets and CD covers and national magazines. This year Gordon has exhibited his work in solo shows in Virginia and New York and has been included in the Noörderlicht Festival in the Netherlands as well in various group shows.

Gordon Stettinius, Family Christmas

Seattle photographer Shannon Welles strives to make palpable the whispers of secrets and history held in a place. Her work primarily stems from stillness, and she is drawn to old worlds, abandoned places, spiritual haunts and mystical spaces. The camera becomes a tool for distillation, a visual listening device, an interpreter, tapping into a world long gone for the briefest of moments. She is in love with her toy cameras, turning her back a bit on modern technology. In doing so, a more intimate image making process has emerged. The unique lith prints she creates are then finished with a beeswax coating and mounted on thin wood. Her work has been in exhibitions in the Northwest and she is head of Seattle’s SlideLuck Potshow, and has been published in Lightleaks Magazine.

Portfolio Review Prep Class

If you’re serious about your photography and interested in getting it out into the wider world portfolio reviews are an excellent networking opportunity to receive critical feedback and make important connections. If you consider what it would cost to take one trip to another city to meet with an editor or curator, $400 for the chance to meet with 8 in one weekend is a very cost effective investment in your career.

We’ve got a real A list of reviewers coming to town, and I strongly encourage anyone who’s on the fence to take advantage of this opportunity. I’d be happy to talk to you about it if you have any questions. 504-269-9740.

The Photo Alliance will offer a free workshop on portfolio review preparation this Saturday for everyone who has registered. Victoria Ryan, who’s taught a Portfolio Course at the New Orleans Academy of Art for years, Louviere+ Vanessa who’s career was launched after attending Review Santa Fe, and myself (Jennifer Shaw) a veteran of two FotoFests and Photo Americas (now photolucida) will all be on hand to talk about the review process and offer advice on how to prepare and present your work to get the most out of your review experience. Participants are encouraged to bring their portfolios.

Please let us know in advance if you plan to attend.
