After briefly (very briefly!!) describing the other major Afro-Cuban Religions (Regla de Palo and Abakuá), Delgado will speak about Regla de Ocha (Santería). Using his own photos he will speak about five ceremonies: la misa espiritual (Spiritist Mass), the Cajón a los Muertos (a ceremony that brings down spirits from the past), a Violin to Ochún, Receiving the Necklaces, and the Asiento, various days in initiation of a santero. Delgado will be accompanied by translator Alan West-Durán, a santero and the subject depicted in some of Delgado's photographs.

Thanks to Thom Bennet for these lovely images from Saturday's opening. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to get the space ready in the preceding weeks. The work looked great, the gallery looked great, and a fine time was had by all! It feels wonderful to finally have a home of our own, and is something we should all be proud of.

The 22 artists represented in IDENTITY invite the viewer to consider the photographic artifact as evidence of life and to re-consider his or her own identity— what it means to be alive in our age, in this place, in our skin on this very day. IDENTITY was juried by Deborah Luster, a highly acclaimed portrait artist who published a book entitled “One Big Self – Prisoners of Louisiana”.

The New Orleans Hope and Heritage Project is calling for color photographs of post-Katrina New Orleans for a book devoted to the celebration and preservation of New Orleans culture. Color photographs of the rebirth of New Orleans will accompany the text while also establishing their own distinct narrative voice. Proceeds will go to the New Orleans Hope and Heritage Project, a non-profit with 501(c)(3) status. All contributions to the book are donated and are tax-deductible. For more information, go to: www.nolahopeandheritage.org. Among the contributors to the anthology are: Richard Ford, Andrei Codrescu, Mona Lisa Saloy, Anders Osborne, Sallie Ann Glassman, Valentine Pierce, Joshua Clark, Alex McMurray, James Nolan, Andy Young, Fred Johnson, and Tom Piazza. The book is currently seeking publication. Please submit files with longest dimension at 10 inches, at 72 dpi. Please submit images to leespeak@cox.net. For questions or concerns: (504) 452-6137.
