We're still finalizing the list of reviewers and sealing the deal on the venue, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up so they can be ready to register once it's open.

Richard Sexton Studio Invite

TERRA INCOGNITA
Photographs of America's Third Coast

Saturday, September 29 from Noon to 4PM
A Gallery for Fine Photography
241 Chartres Street (corner of Bienville) in the French Quarter

An exhibition based on the work from the book will open the following Saturday, October 6; Art for Art's Sake; at The Ogden Museum of Southern Art

Following my preview signing at A Gallery we're having an open studio beginning at 5PM and lasting until either the liquor runs out or everyone wanders off into the night (which tends to occur simultaneously). For those of you who haven't been to my studio before, these are the directions:

Richard Sexton Studio
1412 Dauphine Street (between Esplanade and Kerlerec)

An easy way to remember the location is that I'm in the Marigny just off Esplanade across from Port of Call.

You can see the book on my web site: www.richardsextonstudio.com or at the gallery's web site: www.agallery.com.

Please stop by and say hello at A Gallery and then come by the studio later for drinks. Hope to see you Saturday, either at A Gallery or my studio!

Louisiana ArtWorks Session

Richrd Sexton Book Signing

J.R. Portman at Uptown Gallery

From Mr. Portman:

Just landed myself a last minute addition to a show opening on Saturday at Uptown Gallery, a brand spanking new gallery on the corner of 139 Broadway and River Road Uptown (go figure). The show is featuring paintings by Peter Yokum and is a benefit for the Renew Our Music Fund. The opening reception is this saturday, September 22nd from 6-9 with live music and, most importantly, free booze. I'll be showing 10 pieces from my New Orleans Night landscape series "Terra Nola". For more info, the gallery's website is www.uptowngallerynola.com.

( Sorry - I got this email too late to alert you all about the opening, but you can still go by and see the work. - Jen)

Offices w/Studio access

Gary Garrison (Garrison Digital Color) is reconfiguring his studio space and is going to add a few offices that will be available for rent. The details haven't been worked out completely but the offices will be about 10x10 with storage above the offices. The adjoining studio would be available to rent on a job-to-job basis and there will be a kitchen as well as a bathroom/makeup room. The studio is 20x30 with 16' ceilings and has a cyclorama wall painted studio grey. There will be a common area just outside the offices that will have room for a copy setup and a light table. There is a wall that separates the offices from the studio area. Located at the foot of the Huey P. Long bridge on Jefferson Hwy. just before you get to Clearview it is very convenient to New Orleans and Metairie. I rent space for my darkroom there and it is a great facility. Internet, A/C, heat and an alarm will be included. If you are interested in finding out more please email me at thomnola@yahoo.com.

Meeting Tonight at Our New Home!!

The Photo Alliance now has an official home at 1111 St. Mary St!

Owen signed the lease last week, and as of Sept 1st we are the
legal tenents of this Lower Garden District ground floor
commercial space, right around the corner fromthe Darkroom
- between Magazine and Sophie Wright Place.
It's a cozy 800 sq ft, and will give us a home base for meetings,
exhibitions, workshops and other assorted Photo Alliance events.

This is the first designated use for the funds we raised in April, so
we'd like to issue another BIG thank you to all of you who donated
work and otherwise helped with the success of the innaugural
fundraiser. Please come out to celebrate the fruits of your labor at
the September Photo Alliance Meeting, this Thurday evening,
starting at 6:30pm.

In response to some members suggestions and we're going to change
the structure of our monthly gatherings to include a time for sharing
work with eachother (to put the "photo" back into "photo alliance," if
you will). So, bring a few prints or a whole portfolio, whatever you'd
like to share, and we'll spend the first half hour circulating and
looking at eachother's work. Then at 7pm we'll do the business thing -
as quickly as possible - so those who wish can run off to catch the
Saints season opener.

New Orleans Photo Alliance September Meeting
Thursday, 6:30pm
1111 St Mary St.
New Olreans, LA 70130

Hope to see you all there!

"RETHINKING RECOVERY" Exhibition in Portland

I got this email from the Mark Wooley Gallery in Portland, which features the work of one of our members, Thomas Keifer. Thought I'd post it as a pleasant reminder that not everyone has forgotten about New Orleans. - Jen

Two gifted photographers...

Two years since Katrina.

One compelling 5 day show in our new location: Former Froelick space, next to AUGEN Gallery at 817 SW 2nd/Yamhill.

STEWART HARVEY of Portland and THOMAS KIEFER, formerly of New Orleans, present "Rethinking Recovery: Exhibition & Benefit commemorating the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans"

OPENING, with the artists, TUESDAY, August 28. Show then runs Wednesday through SATURDAY, September 1 daily from 11 AM until 6:00 PM.

This striking photographic exhibit will benefit the Alliance for Affordable Energy, which is a twenty-year old nonprofit group in New Orleans that promotes energy conservation and lobbies for sustainable rebuilding. 10% of each sale and voluntary donations will be sent to this group that is currently providing and installing free thermal barriers to homes in Holy Cross and other devastated neighborhoods.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

ST EWART HARVEY began the series of character studies and New Orleans cityscapes in the spring of 2003. His goal was to discover "What it was about this quirky and challenging city that I found so beguiling." Katrina, of course, altered the project significantly. "It wasn't the aftermath of the event I found compelling." he says. "It was the resilient, quirky and creative individuals who survived and are going to rebuild the city."

THOMAS KIEFER states: "Over 80,000 images in my studio, which sat in the wake of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, merged with the murky waters that flooded the city where I was born and raised. These waters contained an essence both horrific, as well as delightful, but nothing less than a representation of how we combine with the world around us. The emulsion which once represented my vision...had transformed."

We sincerely hope you will visit this rare and powerful exhibition and check out our new location.
