Survive and Thrive Workshop

Survive and Thrive Workshop for Visual Artists

Visual Artists will hone their entrepreneurial skills in a practical, hands-on workshop developed and presented by renowned New Orleans artist Thomas Mann as part of the Arts Council of New Orleans ongoing Business Program for Artists.

In this two day learning lab, students will focus on key areas for success including: Design Development, Public Relations and Pricing. Attendees will be able to apply their learning to their own businesses during the second day of the workshop which will include individual review and helpful critiques of their current work and business practices.
The weekend workshop will be held on March 24th and 25th at Tulane University Jones Hall, Room 306 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The nominal registration fee ($40 for members, $60 for non-members) includes lunch and all workshop materials. Pre-Registration for this space-limited workshop is required and can be done online through the Arts Council’s website at www.artscouncilofneworleans.org

For additional information or to pre-register via phone, call 504-523-1465.

“We are intentionally keeping the workshop group small to ensure that each artist receives personal attention,” said Program Director, Gene Meneray. “I strongly encourage artists to register early by either going to our website or contacting me directly.”

Workshop developer and presenter, Thomas Mann, lives and works in New Orleans where he oversees a jewelry design and production studio, a sculpture studio, and gallery. His jewelry and sculpture works are exhibited at some 250 galleries and stores in the US and abroad and at premier craft events through the US.

Lost Roll of Mardi Gras Film?

Richard Reed found this roll of 120 B&W film in front of his house on Fat Tuesday afternoon. He's pretty sure the pics were taken at Marcus' house, prior to the start of the Ste. Anne parade.

Look like Holga shots...
Anyone know the photographer?

From Zack Smith:

The 1875 statue of St. Roch fell yesterday, and I was there right
after, got some pics and Joe Kight had some words. I think it's a
great story to share.

Jef Jaisun Receives National Blues Award

Keeping the Blues Alive

Jef Jaisun, veteran Seattle-based music photographer, has been named recipient of the 2007 Keeping The Blues Alive award in Photography by The Blues Foundation of Memphis, Tennessee.

Jaisun, who began shooting in Seattle area clubs over 30 years ago, has been a mainstay on the national blues circuit for the past decade. His coverage has ranged from Chicago to New Orleans, Clarksdale to Los Angeles, and from Seattle to the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania. During his career he’s amassed an estimated half-million images, predominantly of blues, rhythm and blues and jazz artists. His archives provide in-depth visual documentation of late 20th century and early 21st century blues performers.

Jaisun’s work has been featured in every major American blues magazine and on the covers of numerous CDs.  In 2004, he donated more than 250 images to the Chicago Public Library’s Blues Music Archives. His rare 1985 photo of B.B. King embracing the late Luther Allison at Switzerland's Nyon Festival was a highlight of 2006's KBA-winning book, The B.B. King Treasures. Two of Jaisun’s post-Hurricane Katrina images were selected for the 2006 Jazz and Heritage Festival Photo Exhibition.

Since Katrina, Jaisun has worked closely with the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, Tipitina’s Foundation and other relief organizations, both as photographer and fund-raiser. He claims close spiritual and musical ties with the Crescent City, and is a member of the New Orleans Photo Alliance.

A selection of Jaisun's images are currently on display at Seattle’s Highway 99 Blues Club. Included in the exhibit are blues legends John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Etta James, Albert Collins, Elizabeth Cotten, Brownie McGhee, Taj Mahal and B.B. King.

Louisiana State Museum Photo Request

Louisiana State Museum Seeks Quotidian Photographs

The Louisiana State Museum is currently seeking photographs of New Orleans from both before and after Hurricane Katrina. The exact use of these photographs has not yet been determined. Some, with permission of the artist, will be used in photo slideshows to convey the spirit of the city before the storm and the resilience that, always part of the city’s spirit, has allowed the people of New Orleans to return and rebuild after each natural and man-made disaster. Other photographs will be purchased and become part of our permanent collection.

In the past, our museum has focused on historical imagery of the state and city. Since Hurricane Katrina, we have begun to collect more items related to our contemporary history, and many of these will be included in a large exhibition that will address all aspects of Hurricane Katrina and how it affected our daily lives. Our current photography collection, however, is lacking in images of every-day life from the middle of the 20th century until after the hurricane. We have a number of early 20th century historical photographs, and more contemporary photographs of musicians, cultural events, and cultural icons. Missing are images of every day life beyond the French Quarter, Jazz Funerals and Mardi Gras. If you know of any photographs showing quotidian New Orleans events or neighborhoods beyond those frequented by tourists (these neighborhoods being those most heavily affected by the hurricane), the State Museum would greatly appreciate your help.

The Alliance's New Logo design by Tom Varisco

The New Orleans Photo Alliance is proud to announce the creation of our new logo designed by Tom Varisco, an Alliance member. Tom's design went through a number of incarnations as he played with various possibilities that creating an identity for a group includes. This is a major step: creating a visual identity for the Alliance that will be enduring. The logo, which has a kind of "constuctivist" feel to it plays off of the key letters "P" and "A " for which he specifically designed the typeface. Please visit his website to learn more about his previous work, including the recently published book "Spoiled" which includes his photography work. Keep an eye out for the placement of the logo as we go forward with new shows, a future website and more!

by Leslie Parr

This photographic group exhibition, presented by the New Orleans Photo Alliance and juried by David Johnson, features 31 images by 23 artists which capture aspects of carnival celebrations both near and far, from maskers to marching bands, New Orleans to Tenerife. The exhibition will run from Feb 1 - March 15, 2007 at Brad Edelman Gallery, in the French Quarter.

Flambeaux
by Andy Levin

David Johnson, editor of Louisiana Cultural Vistas magazine, juried the show. Of his selection process he said, “I approached this from the angle of trying to include the various components of Mardi Gras -- from krewe parades and their crowds, to the Indian tradition, and masked processions and balls -- while taking note of a photographer's composition and the challenge of capturing a set moment in time.”
