Month of Photography - December 2006
We want to use the anchor of the CAC show to draw attention to photography in New Orleans throughout the month of December. Putting the "Focus on Photography", if you will...
"Atlanta Celebrates Photography" is the inspiration, and there's also a similar event in Madison, WI, called "Photo Midwest".
We'd like to generate buzz by printing up brochures directing people to every photo related showing or event taking place in New Orleans that month. (The brochures probably won't be too slick this year, but we've got to start somewhere, right?)
To this end, I've been contacting galleries to see if they're planning on hanging any photography that month, or willing to squeeze some in. Most are scheduled pretty far in advance so it's a little hard, but we may be able to get them thinking about next year at the very least. Here's what we've got so far:
A Gallery for Fine Photography will have a Diane Arbus show up.
Barrister's will be showing Dennis Couvillion.
Bassetti will do something, tba.
Carol Robinson has a permanent "hall of photography".
Arthur Roger will have Debbie Fleming Caffery in back room, maybe others.
LeMieux will have Bobby Wozniack in back room.
Cole Pratt will have Leslie Addison & George Yerger in back room.
Heriard-Cimino will have a group show including Michel Varisco and Elizabeth Shannon.
Bergeron Gallery will have vintage photographs.
Gallerie Porche West will have something, tba.
Southern Lights Studio will show Jackson Hill's "Night Nature" series.
George Long Photography will have works by George Long.
The Ogden Museum will have William Christianberry and Photographs from the Permanent Collection.
The Darkroom will host a juried theme show on "The Human Body", to be curated by David Houston. Call for entries here. 522-3211
The Farrington-Smith Gallery on St. Claude Ave is willing to host a photo show. 942-8600
Moxy Studios on Magazine St. may be willing to put up "something colorful" in their back room. 309-2516
Another component of this month could be a series of public lectures. Joshua Mann Pailet has agreed to give a talk about collecting photography. There will be the CAC jurors' panel discussion on the 10th. Perhaps some of the artists featured in the CAC show could do slide shows/art talks. The Darkroom is also willing to work something in around their exhibition.
It would be really cool to have a big portfolio night (ala "Underexposed"). If NOMA can't do it perhaps we could find another venue to host.
So, that's the latest. If any of you know of shows (in galleries or alternative spaces) to add to the list, want to have open studios, have some ideas about lectures you'd like to see or anything else, by all means offer your suggestions.

Sign up and CAC exhibit update
My apologies to all who are scratching their heads over the difficulty in signing on to the NOPA blog. This is a vexing problem that Bryce Lankard has been putting in many hours trying to solve. We had no idea that it would be this difficult. I think the main issue is public vs. private blog spot, but still it shouldn't be this difficult for any one who wants to join. This particular site that hosts our blog apparently is still in development with bugs to work out. For the time being if everyone could be a little patient and let "Blog Master Bryce" work on the solution I will notify the group when we are ready for signup. On the positive side, it is gratifying see the response to the invite to join.
Yesterday, Victoria Ryan, Michel Varisco, Jenn Shaw, Bryce Lankard and I met with Don Marshall and his UNO ArtAdm class to begin the process of organizing the CAC show. We should be making our call for entries by weeks end after we nail down a few more details. This is going to be a terrific event so stay tuned for the announcement.

Community Involvement
Greetings Alliance.
I am working on making our community blog a bit better. I am trying to build an events calendar and add links to relevant sites.
As far as the calendar is concerned...if you click on the link, it should take you to a seperate web page for the calendar, and if you are a mac user and use ical, you can even subscribe to it so you automatically get updated on our events, meetings, etc. If you have an event or know of one that should be listed, add it in a comment to this post or email me directly.
Also, I encourage everyone to sign up and add as much info in your profile as you want. If you would like me to include a link to your personal website or any other relevant site, again put it in a comment or email me and I will try to include it.
And finally, lets do our part to build this community. Remind and harass your fellow photographers into joining our discussion. If you know of a gallery or other institution that should be aware of what we are up to, let them know. Heck, make your mother proud and tell her too.
thanks,
bryce

Charlie Varley at Ferrara Gallery

The Katrina 366 show by Charlie Varley opened to a packed house this Friday. Congratulations are in order all around. It is an extremely powerful body of work, and in the words of Jonathan Ferrarra "it is hard to believe all these images are by ONE person!" The show is hung salon style (ala the NOMA show) and it is a lot of work to behold. If you want to see photojournalism executed at the highest level, I recommend paying a visit to the Ferrarra gallery.

Mission draft adjustment
I received a comment from one of the members suggesting the removal of "national attention" from the statement and I realized that the whole sentence could be made tighter. Perhaps everyone could review this suggested change. Comments welcome -Michel

Moments in Time: New Orleans at the crossroads
Greetings Photo Alliance,
Owen Murphy and myself are anxious to commence assembling the work for our travelling exhibition. We have invited another curator to assist us and provide an unbiased perspective on the work we hope to assemble. This person is John Glenn, Director of Photography for the Atlanta Constitution Journal. John, has become familiar with our city over the past decade, attending Jazz Fests, participating in a number of photography events in the city as well as exhibiting his own photography here. His view as an outsider with a knowledge of our culture and his status in our field will be a great benefit in building the best show that we can.
The theme of this exhibit is the cultural identity of this city pre and post Katrina. “What it means to live in New Orleans,” if you will. Our goal is to showcase not only the city itself but with the the most exceptional photography possible. The work we are seeking will necessarily be slanted towards an artistic documentary style. We want to show as broad and accurate a portrait of the city as possible, meaning that we want to venture beyond the tourist facade of the city as well. Ideally we would prefer to use more refined bodies of work rather than single images. Unfortunatley this also means that fewer photographers will have more work represented. Our target number will be to have 5-10 photographs from each photographer represented.
In order to make this travelling exhibition feasible we will also be asking participants to be responsible for aspects of our presentation. For shipping purposes we are urging that final work be in framed dimensions of either 16x20” or 20x24”. We hope to have a consistent (and affordable) framing style for all the work. We also would appreciate a high quality digital file of the work to use for the catalog (cross your fingers that we can pull that off as even with generous discounts we will need donations and signifcant funding to produce the book we are dreaming of) as well as for use in the website and any promotional materials. We will do our best to assist anyone who needs help in any of these areas. The same bio information we are collecting for the NOPA website will be needed for this this show as well. Any website or gallery links that you may have would be especially useful. Since we are planning to keep this show on the road for as long as possible, we will not be trying to sell the prints that we are exhibiting, but will do all we can to make it easy for prospective buyers to be able to buy your work. At this point it seems the most logical way to accomplish this will be through the NOPA website. Developing an online gallery with either credit card or paypal options could be the solution. This also means that if you want to sell your work, we will need to know what you want to sell them for and you should have additional prints available besides the framed work that travels with the show.
At present, this is the show that will be launched at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art in Jan/Feb of 2007. It will then travel to the Jazz Festival in Tarragona, Spain to open in late March of 2007 and be on display for a month at two venues. One is the large exhibition space at the Tarragona City Hall and the other is at the Metropol, which is the venue for the festivals main concerts. After this we are working to continue exhibiting the show throughout Europe for the rest of the spring and summer and are working towards a tour of the show in the US the following year at universities and other venues.
So please keep all this in mind as you consider what you might want to contribute to this exhibition. If you have a body of work you feel fits the bill, Owen and I can’t wait to see it. If you have the ability to email jpgs to us, that would be a great help. Otherwise we will look forward to making the rounds to look at prints, contact sheets, anything you would like to propose for inclusion.
Respectfully yours,
Bryce Lankard

me your recommendations for jurors.
Administration/Logistics: The exhibition is organized
by The New Orleans Photography Alliance and the
Graduate Program in Arts Administration at U.N.O. My
students in the program will be responsible for
working with the C.A.C. staff on P.R. and marketing,

I will send out more detailed information after a few
things are resolved. We will need people to volunteer
for different things. The call for volunteers will be
forthcoming.
Thanks,
